Can't change out handguard on completed upper with A2 sight post

Recently got another complete midlength upper with pinned A2 front sight post. Went to replace black plastic handguard with Magpul SL midlength handguard, but found that the mounting plate at the front sight, which is usually circular in shape, had been changed to a triangular shaped plate. Needless to say, my Magpul handguard won’t fit. I’ve purchased a handful of completed uppers from Palmetto before and never had any issue… Anyone know why Palmetto made this change? Thank you!

Try calling Palmetto customer service, they made it.

The regular MOE forend will fit a triangular cap, but unfortunately the SL line does not. It’s a magpul issue, not PSA.

FWIW, This reviewer said he had to finagle to get it on.

I had the same issue recently. I purchased a mid-length upper and a Magpul SL handguard not realizing the triangular handguard retainer was an issue. After the first test fit and a bit of reading I decided to order a round retainer and switch them. It was a 15 minute process and well worth it.

The pins are tapered so knock them out from the smaller side. Swap the retainer, line up the sight post and reinsert the pins.

I didn’t add a photo of the finished product.

I’ve added a rear sight and a QD red dot mount since the pic.
