Saying it’s not an AR10 simply because it has a semi proprietary upper on it is just silly. Every bit of marketing is that it will attach directly to a PA10 Gen 3 (which is a DPMS Gen 1 pattern receiver) with a stock adapter, just like the AR-15 sized JAKL uppers. I wouldn’t call it a moot point on the DPMS G2 pattern, because not only has PSA produced DPMS G2 guns in the past (PX10 line), but DPMS has been showing off pre-production DPMS G2 rifles since SHOT 2023. Given that JAKL uppers add a fair bit of weight, and PA10s are already known for being on the heavy side for an AR10, I think it is completely reasonable to want it to be based around a receiver pattern that’s entire marketing premise was reducing size and weight. I’ve seen several interviews from the SHOT floor that mention a lower down the line that will have the 1913 picatinny section integrated into the lower, perhaps there will be a chance to shave some weight there.
I think you completely misunderstood me on the X5.7. I know it’s not a Roni style product, and that’s not what I was inferring. I was asking if the intent was to be able to purchase the upper assembly and attach it to a Rock 5.7 frame, much like the 3d printed prototype is currently set up, or if it’s only intended as a complete firearm, and will only use Rock 5.7 internal parts. Obviously, a bespoke lower assembly would make it easier to design things like a safety and a more usable bolt release method, but nontheless I was curious as to what the intention was for the project, at least as far as it’s been devleoped so far.
The action release is not ambi. I believe this can be seen in the TFB TV video on the shotgun, IIRC. It would be a little awkward, but after looking at the location of the release and messing around with my Mossberg 590, I believe lefties like you and I could perhaps roll our hand over the rear of the receiver and push it with the thumb, or come from underneath with the trigger finger.
Either way, not the end of the world for me, the most important feature is that tang safety!
Blockquoteyeah the vuk was designed to be a modernized their take on an ak12 i think. its pretty bad arse… like most of what they showed up with to shot is bad arse… since its a hybrided jakl upper i bet its a bit heavier than a jakl is now… so probably 8-10 lbs? maybe? depending on barrel length, and other things. thats just a guess though.
AKV-521, not the AK-12. The AKV-521 is a product designed by Kalashnikov Concern about 2 years ago now that divides an AK style weapon into a milled upper receiver group and a stamped lower receiver, to provide some manner of modularity like the AR-15. As I understand it, it was intended mostly to allow Russian civilians to be able to have more calibers while still being able to stay within the restricted quantity of firearms they are allowed to own (5 total, I believe?)
It’s a very interesting concept, and I’d love to see a US company attempt an outright clone of the concept, or more importantly clone the large caliber AKV-721, which is .308 based. That one is pretty interesting in that it ditches the dust cover safety lever in favor of ambi thumb safeties and actually has ambi charging handles, unlike a traditional AK.
The lower half of the X5.7 is a serialized receiver, it is NOT the same as a rock lower, and it is NOT going to be compatible with rock slides from what I have seen so far.
What I’ve gathered from the (several) videos I’ve seen is that the 3d printed prototype is currently wearing a rock slide but that the production model will have a proprietary bolt design that shares some parts with the rock pistol such as the extractor.
Thank you I’ve got a PSA jakl 13.7 and previously the dagger compact ordered from PSA more than a dozen times I didn’t even know there was a community till this year.
Happy to have you with us. You will find the people in here more than willing to help out with any questions you may have.
Be sure to share your knowledge with us as well. @scotthiggins1911
If they do produce the bullpup, does anyone from PSA know if it will work alright left handed? Couldn’t tell from the pictures where the ejection port would sit when shouldered and I’m wondering if it’s just going to sling brass right into your arm/chest?
i guess it depends what you call a ar10, the lower, or the upper or both mated together. yes the jakl 308 will use a ar10 with an addition of the jakl buffertube part and the jakl specific bolt hold open… but to me a jakl is no more an ar10 than a ruger 10/22 is an ar10 regardless of the lower. I do see your point with the lower being a gen 1 dpms ar10 based lower though. To me its a moot point because the Upper of the Jakl does not matter handguard wise regarding being gen 1 dpms or gen2 dpms height. perhaps i wasnt clear in that regard? You are correct Psa did produce the PX10 line for a limited amount of time… (speaking of which i hope that we can get a new g2 dpms ar10 series out of the new and improved DPMS. with them being shown since shot last year i hope that it is a good looking prospect there) The Gen2 lower being smaller would mean they would have meant they would have had to develop the Jakl 308 on that lower to begin with. since they initially did not obviously, i would imagine at this time there would be no plans to build it on the gen2 dpms lower. I apologize if i had not been clearer initially. As for wanting reduced weight, i[m all for it. since i’ve been sick, i dont hve the stamina or endurance and strength to really hold many rifles upright, so i have to sit to shoot, or use my BOG tripod to mount the rifle in it to hold for me. So yes, lighter is much m uch better.
I’m not following bout a lower with 1913 picatinny section integrated. where would it be integrated? I can see an upper as a monolithic style upper, but why have a 1913 rail integrated to a lower?
then yes i probably did misunderstand you. but no the x5.7 is its own stand alone gun. you would not buy a rock lower to attach the x57 upper to. the grip just looks similar to a rock right now is all due to the 3d printing prototype as you have said. Using the rock internals just helps simplify parts. I do not know the intention of the 5.7 carbine other than to make us a pretty cool maybe close to mp7 looking 5.7 carbine. you’d have to ask Jamin or the engineers what the intention was to be totally sure on the intention. I was pretty impressed that they came up with it after about 4 months of work though.
you’re correct, it seems i got my numbers/photos confused…as you can see the ak12 does have some apparence similarity to the 521… my bad on the number misnomer.
ak12:
I have always wondered what the firearms rules were for russian citizens… i hadnt really given it much thought as to what they can and cannot own. especially since the fall of the iron curtain. that would make sense to give them more options. i sure as heck dont know what i’d do if i were only allowed to own 5 of anything. lol.
I like the vuk, as it seems to allow you to have the ability to change barrels rather that is what they had hinted at anyways. i think that its a cool idea, but ak’s arent my #1 favorite, so it didnt get my top 3 for voting sadly. it was a close 4 or 5. I have every belief that PSA can pull it off without any issues… as i feel the same way about all of the rifles and pistols they debut’ed this past shot. Now you’re talking about the 721, and i’d be behind that more than a vuk, as i’ve always wanted a us version of say a svd or a psl but in .308… i think that market would explode if psa were to produce an ak based large caliber gun, 308, 6.5creedmoor 338 lapua whatver have you. i think most newer model evolutions of the AK should ditch that dust cover selector / safety switch and move over into the thumb or another more easily operated by a finger safety. Ambi charging handles sounds pretty awesome too… i’d be on board.
this is awesome… i missed that bit of info and thank you for sharing it @GuitarGuy
Don’t let the lower numbers discourage you from making the other guns. I’m still excited to see the 9mm Jakl, especially if it can outperform the CZ Scorpion in pricing. Hopefully the fact that it was also shown last year means it’s further along, and maybe we can see it sometime this year.
