I worked at a very large very corporate place once, and my boss would continually get exasperated at my turning down of overtime, especially when it was an “on the spot” offer for “more money” (his way of phrasing asking us to stay when we were one foot out the door.) I don’t mind working a bit extra if you ask me with proper notice so I know I’m getting into it - nothing irritates me more than thinking I’m finished for the day only to have that ripped out from under me.
One time his exasperation got the best of him and he blurted out “what, you don’t like money?” I replied, no, I like money, that’s why I’m here. I also like not being here - which is why I’m going home. See you tomorrow.
I had another one some years later that would continually schedule things that directly involved me to get done on my day off when he absolutely did not have to. Upon showing my frustration, he asked why I had such an issue with coming in on my day off. After staring at him in disbelief at the question, I said “I’m here upwards of 50 hours a week already, can you please handle scheduling things you require me for within that timeframe? My newborn can’t speak yet, but I’m sure she’d appreciate it.”
Dead silence in return on that one.
There’s nothing worse than a boss with no respect for his employees’ work/life balances.
I retired from the Army in 2014 had a walk on job with General Dynamics the following week working in the Stryker Program. The pace was nice, slow and quiet. Four months went by and the Boss asked “would you like to work overtime?”
I said “are you finished?” He said sure I handed him my access keycard, keys to the office, went to the parking lot got on my Harley Fatbob and drove around the rest of the day. Me and the wife have been inseparable ever since.
