Shooting bench ideas

I looked for existing thread, couldn’t find one, I don’t like polluting the Forum with redundant stuff.

Saw this on FB, they shared dimensions, to make it easier to build.

Awhile back California Refugee posted this idea:

I’ve been on the lookout for a large spool like that for this very reason. Some people want a fortune for them…some people literally give them away if you can haul it off. I’m too cheap to buy one.

The first one posted is excellent IF it’s off the grass and covered. At least around me that is. The ground stays wet like I’m in a swamp so that wood would rot for me. Even still, I’ve considered making one myself. Now that you posted some dimensions of one up, I may actually use a bunch of my scrap wood to make one.

The first one works perfectly. But build it where you want it to lay because it’s HEAVY

@bonamoleonard thanks for posting those.

the first one is excellent, but to me i’ve often found i wanted more room on the desk area in front of the seat. so i’d probably build it with a bit wider of a desk for both who sit to the left on the left side and to the right on the right side.

The Cable Spool idea is a great one too.. but like yall said i would only be able to do it if i got the spool for free.

lol i say i could build it like i was still healthy… smh… wishful thinking.. lol… oh well yall know what imeant.

thanks for the post leonard.

Put this together from plans many years back. Best portable bench I’ve used in many iterations over the years (including retail and DIYs). Very stable, very portable with the ‘rugged buddy’ folding legs.

For a ‘fixed emplacement’ if I ever had a nice place of my own for that, I’ve considered just mirroring it and using heavy fixed steel legs bolted to a concrete base pad, or cinderblock like my club uses (their benches are poured concrete tops, however  )

I like it! Portable would be great for most folks. I am an electrician and we do get wooden cable reels now and then. But I might build a 10’ x 12’ deck in my yard, then build a shooting bench on top. If I build an elevated deck, then I would be shooting at a downward trajectory so I wouldn’t need a back stop. I haven’t decided 100% yet and still like your portable idea for the deck and other uses besides shooting rest. :us_outlying_islands:

I was this close to asking what the (censored) optic you had mounted to that thing before I took a closer look and realized what was going on.

The range I typically use has the “seat” with adjustable height, and I like that for getting a comfortable position on the rifle. It actually pivots on a ~3" dia pipe with holes every couple inches to adjust the height.

i like your tavor

With the Geissele fire control group and lightning bow upgrade it makes what was a miserable trigger into a rifle that is enjoyable to shoot!

That’s fantastic. Can you post some specs on it so it could be reproduced? the table legs look like they are from a heavy duty saw horse or something similar, where did you get those?

The legs are Rugged Buddy folding sawhorse legs. I doesn’t look like you can find them retail any longer, but you might be able to find them in the secondary market. If I find another pair locally I’ll snap them up. They come in a few different lengths. Mine are 28" which works great for me, but over 6’ people would prefer the 34" legs on tall people that have used my bench.

Thanks for the info. I appreciate it!

This is one I built a couple years ago out of pieces of aluminum bleachers and some other scrap/trash aluminum we had at work. The black pieces were cutoffs from an aluminum awning we had built.

It’s a little awkward, but it’s light enough one person can pick it up. I don’t remember the dimensions, but when turned upside down, it will fit right in a side by side bed.

We use it at my buddy’s place where just set up in fields and use hills as backstops. So I only put three legs which makes it very stable on uneven ground
