300 Blackout question

I’m thinking of getting into 300 Blackout.
Currently, I own a S&W M&P AR rifle. As well as a PSA AR pistol.
My question is, if I want to shoot 300 Blackout, will I only need a 300 upper or is there more that I need to install? Here’s the PSA upper that I’m looking at. If there’s a better solution, please let me know.

Or, is it easier to just buy a dedicated 300 rifle?
This is solely to be used at the range for target practicing

Thank you

That complete upper will work.
Or these are a good deal if you wanted.

Are you saying that the upper that I’m looking at, along with the lower that you just suggested sill build the ultimate 300 Blackout?

Go with the rifle one. That and the complete upper you listed are all you need other than mags and ammo.

Word of caution - make absolute sure you have a way to label the mags as 300 BO

Your warning is so that I don’t confuse the 300 with 556, correct?
But can’t I use 556 mags? I have dozens?
Thank you

yea you can use that upper on your current lowers just swap out the buffer for H2. also you can use the standard magazines but magazines specifically made for 300blk can help with any cycling issues

i haven’t had any cycling issues with the standard 556 magazines, but im using super sonic no suppression

finally, that’s a full length rifle don’t use a brace or blade use a real stock… 300blk just utilizes a pistol length gas system to correct the velocity in fact that’s the very same upper i use…

Question. Why the consideration of getting into .300blk if you only intend to use it for range plinking? It’s a more expensive round than 5.56/.223.

.300blk shines in subsonic and home defense with a shorter barrel, it won’t have the same concussive/blinding effect or overpenetration issues that 5.56 can have and doesn’t require a 14.5-20" barrel for optimal performance like 5.56 does.

I can understand wanting to get into .300blk if you wanted to shoot subsonics often or use it for HD, but a rifle-length upper just to plink with? Seems pointless, you can use either of your current ARs for that and spend less on ammo and not have to worry about blowing up a weapon by mistakenly mixing up a round.

If anything, since you said you already have an AR pistol, buy a short barrel .300blk upper and slap that on the pistol to make a nice, compact weapon.

not much price difference anymore…

i never put any tape on my magazines i like to use the same magazines at the range for both 556 and 300blk solely for plinking

Thank you

meh… 300blk is commonly overlooked for it’s biggest potential, being the lightest “varmint hunting carbine”

Which again I could totally understand if that was to be the intended purpose of use. I was just thinking for range plinking only with a 16" barrel it’s a pricier redundancy over what he’s already got.

idk… guess could just use 22lr… i have a 9mm pcc ready because im broke and cant waste any 300blk on some petty thug… so i get it

Correct. Yes I use my 556 mags as well.
Sorry I fell asleep before replying earlier and loaded the rifle lower.
@kryingame

You can grab these bands from Amazon or similar places.

Just like a wrist band.

what would happen if you shoot 5.56 through a 300blk?

@kryingame yes, you just swap the upper. You may need a buffer change.

As has already been recommended, color code or label the UPPER and the MAGAZINES. You can use 5.56 mags for both rounds and a 300blk WILL chamber in a 5.56 upper. But that will be a really bad day at the range for you.

I agree I just built my first 300 blk and went with the 9" barrel. The 300 blk was designed for shorter barrels and gets full powder burn. It is also better if you decide to run a suppressor down the road. For 16" I would stick to the 5.56. $0.55 a round is better then $0.90 a round for the 300 blk.

Off topic but: Make sure you record it for Brandon Herrera’s Gun Darwin Awards. The 223 round will most likely explode as you hammer it into the chamber. 300 AAC has a much shorter head space dimension.

ah so it only goes one way? no worries then seems like it’s a safer option
