I was considering the Primary Arms SLx 1-6x24mm as a best of both worlds scope. My thought is it could operate as a red dot type optic with the illuminated reticle and also be useful at longer ranges because of the magnification. Does anyone have hands on experience to prove or disprove my theory?
That is exactly what LPVO are for.
I figure that would be the idea but what I am hoping for is hands on experience from people that have used it for that purpose. How did it function as a close range red dot. How does it perform at longer ranges? Any other suggestions in the same price range?
I would venture to say that outside of competing in 3-gun, Cola wars, etc…the majority of folks that buy a red dot for “home defense” will never use it that way. I use a 1-8 on my hunting rifle because I have deer come in closer than what I would need a normal scope for.
I use a PA ACSS 1-6. It serves well as best of both. At 1x, you can turn the illumination on and use it as a red dot for close engagements, but you can also zoom in and use it for extended ranges as well.
I like the way optics can gather light , thus extending your shooting time. A friend and I were plinking in the woods at dusk one time. I kept shooting and hitting with my 4x32 scope. He had a 3/4 inch 4x cheapo scope. He finally gave up. Said he couldn’t see the target thru his scope. I looked up and realized that I was having a hard time seeing the target with the naked eye. Thru my scope it was bright and easy to see. Thru his the target vanished. I would rather have a scope (especially a LPVO with a red- or better yet green dot) than a Red Dot Sight.
I’ve got 2 lpvo. They are by far my favorite optics for my ar. Both of mine are swampfox. I’ve got nothing but great things to say about the company and the products I’ve used.
@quiet_observer Swampfox hired at least one of the guys that helped Primary Arms become a bigger player in the optics world. I think both companies are leading in some of the innovation with reticles, battery life, and design.
I really like my Leupold VX-R and Mark-AR (green dot), they are all 1-4x. Push button on-
/off, day light bright, auto sleep, short and light weight. I can dial them up to 4x for 100/200 distant…
although I wish they were 1-6x (or even higher), but I have had others which proved to be heavier and bulkier (Bushnell Elite 1-6 and Burris RT-6). I settled with these Leupold asthey offer me very good balance on price and performance.
YMMV.
I know I’m resurrecting am old thread here, but I wanted to give my opinion.
I have the Primary Arms 1-8x with the first focal plane. It works great for it’s intended purpose. I choose PA over Vortex because of the reticle. (I am using this on my 16in 5.56)
I would say if you want to use it as a red dot the first focal plane is really a must.
My only 2 complaints, the image is slightly blurry at 1x no matter how I try to focus it.
Also there isn’t an auto on / auto off feature for the illumination.
