Choosing an Optic

I am looking for something that would be an improvement over the “iron sights”. How do I make a decision on an optic on my AR 15 for use at 100-150 yards to get rid of varmints and predators on my property.

  1. depends on your eyesight
  2. depends on how far away.

The Vortex Strike Eagle that PSA is blowing out is a great option. It might be slightly more magnification than you need but it is a great optic with mount, a lifetime warranty, and excellent Vortex Customer Service. Being a LPVO, you will have 1x for up close shooting while still having the magnification you need for longer shots.

i second the strike eagle. it is one of my favorite optics. its a bit pricey though too… so if you’re looking for just a red dot, i recommend going with the Sig Sauer Romeo 5. its about 120.00 and its perfect for a red dot optic.

My eyesight is pretty good, and I am looking at 100-150 yards

Is this the one you are referring to?

Oh, ok, I see now. Yes, that is more than I wanted to spend, probably worth it, but just cannot afford at this point.

Are there advantages/disadvantages to the scope vs red dot for the application I described? I have no experience with either, so I am really in the dark on this area.

well the biggest is magnification to begin with. second is the rectical where the strike eagle has an illluminated circle with and the romeo just has a light up red dot. i think the romeo has a 1x magnification, so there is something there if memory serves… where the strike eagle has a much greater magnification obviously and is adjustable. hope that helps some.

Yes Sir, that helps, thank you GamecockOperator

So you see anything on the Optics page that would be close to the Vortex Strike Eagle at the $200.00 price point?

You are probably not going to find a decent lpvo for that price.

Ok, Thank you GuitarGuy.

i think there is a 100.00 discount right now on the strike eagle i linked… type the word STRIKE as the coupon code and see if that works.

Thanks, I tried but no luck!! I think I will have to just wait and save some money. I will use the sights that came on the rifle for now.

I’d look at these two Sig optics. I have Sigs on all my rifles, and I like their products.

Although out of stock at Palmetto, I’ve seen this as low as $240 on up to $299. Reviews are very good.

I just put a similar scope on my latest rifle, but a 3x12x44 with the Vortex mount. Very pleased with it so far. This is a traditional scope, no red dot or lighting of any kind.

Hope this helps.

If you are looking mainly at the 100-150 range at the extreme, with your price point, you may want to consider a red dot/magnifier combo. It’s around $220-@240. It has advantages/disadvantages compared to an LPVO. An LPVO will typically have greater clarity at max range. The red dot/mag combo has the advantage of being able to remove the optic magnification for closer distances, which eliminates eye relief. That is why I chose the SIG dot/mag combo ($212 on sale) for my 300Blackout SBR. 2-2.5" eye relief sucks.

Which combo did you get?

Thanks Daddymanthemag, I will check it out now.

Least expensive I could find at the time. The MSR and micro magnifier.
