Born in Milwaukee

It’s obvious I am not from South Carolina because I talk funny. Born in Milwaukee, grew up in Brown Deer, moved to Grafton, hung out in Cedarburg, worked in West Bend, did my target shooting at the range in Waukesha. I bet those are place names neither of you Wisconsinites have heard in a while, ain’ta?

Had a few friends in the Air Force from cheese country. They pronounced it 'Wissgonzin’.
They said they used to go to the Dells and it was really nice.

Dells is like a Cheesier Branson….

Never been to either one. But I have been to the U.P. (K.I. Sawyer AFB in Marquette) and been all around the Ozarks in Missouri and Arkansas.

Was in UP once, in January or February. Cold but beautiful and peaceful since I guess it was too cold and frozen for tourists—or any other sane person. We stayed in Manistique and saw the cool bridge that is supported by water. Of course we drove across the Mackinac Bridge. And since we were fairly close, took a quick side trip to Ontario so I can say that once in my life I was out of the country. How long ago was this? Well, you only needed to show a driver’s license to get across the Canadian border.

Was at The Dells on a day just a bit too cool for water rides—but we went on ‘em anyway since we were there, probably wouldn’t have another chance to go, and after seeing tv ads and bumper stickers for the Dells for thirty years I was not going to waste this opportunity! We did ride the Ducks, which are very cool WWII vintage amphibious trucks. My impression of the Dells is that it’s a parking lot with rides, sort of like how Gatlinburg is a parking lot with souvenir shops. Now, where exactly is Wall Drug, anyway? :cowboy_hat_face: (I was there once and have the bumper sticker, btw.).

Oooo speaking of bumper stickers. If you are from Milwaukee and are old enough, or should I say sufficiently experienced, you might remember this bumper sticker: “I closed Wolski’s”. Fyi, I never did close Wolski’s. Maybe I do need to make a bucket list after all.

I was engaged to a girl from Racine. She had moved to Florida with her family and migrated to Alabama. Had a damn funny (to me) last name.
