Right now I have two PSA CHF uppered ARs, one with a LaRue trigger, the other a Son’s of Liberty competition trigger , and ZeroFail BCGs, which I am very pleased with, so I decided I need a new project to do, just for fun.
So I am going to re-barrel my older plain blem PSA 16" Mid-Length 5.56 with a Bravo Company 16 incher just because, and this will get a LaRue (I like it 0.0000001% better than SOL), and a Tool Craft BCG.
I have a friend who has been law enforcement, first a local cop, then a state trooper and then finally a federal agent. He said my two as is are both ‘duty capable’ and that the #3 should be the same if everything.
Absolutely! It’s called Black Rifle Disease for a good reason. However, I’ll suggest doing something different. Not a specific suggestion, but a general idea. If you have two nearly identical rifles, why not make the third something in a different category.
Maybe a 18" or longer heavy barrel long distance setup. Or a short barrel pistol, because screw the NFA. Or a lightweight build with every component chosen to be as light as possible without compromising function. Do a pencil barrel. Or a clone build. Do a A1 or A2 rifle. Or you can really go nuts and dip into the world of 300 Blackout. Variety is the spice of life!
“If” the election goes our way, then I am going to upgrade my 18" PSA nitride barrel to 20" for coyotes.
Might even splurge for a 20 to 24 inch heave barrel…ooooh the options!
But for now I am enjoying my 16" ARs and tracking how they handle in a journal for each. Mainly to try and prove that similar barrels can group different, and that each one has its own ‘flavor’ I have a few 30-somethings in my office whom speak the ‘gospel’ that you absolutely must use the specific bullet weight no matter what.
I am no expert by any means, I was only in the Army for 10 years, but have been shooting since I was eight years old, and now in my 60’s…but the youngsters need to see proof…unless FB says it is so
Do the LaRue’s have a noticeable improvement over the PSA (Schmid, I believe) 2-stage triggers? I’m asking because I have a heavier profiled (A2 style) 18" 223 Wylde PSA upper and I love the NIB 2-stage that came with my PSA lower
But I keep hearing and reading contradictory opinions about the LaRue or the PSA triggers being the best for the money. Having a great trigger that doesn’t break the bank, I’m looking at you Bill Geissele, is important to me. Any thoughts?
Building out AR’s for fun is exactly what the platform lends itself to. Put together a ‘WWSD’ - style ultralight weight AR, an 18" or 20" DMR Mk-12 style or whatever tickles your fancy. Shooting should be fun and what’s more fun than piecing together the exact gun that you want?
I really like them, the two stage is very nice. I usually wait until they are on sale, usually PA has them on sale on the major holidays.
The PSA triggers are ok, but I like the LRs and how they feel
as for your question, i’ve used both in my builds, as well as many geissele, hyperfire and some other name brands, and of them all so far, bang for the buck is the PSA trigger. As for the difference between the PSA and The LaRue, to me its the psa thats better for me. that said, its such a negligable difference im probably just voting my wallet this way on this question. ymmv.
yea it has even in other economies sadly. i may be college educated numerous times over, but ive always been working poor. the idea of a middle class died with my parents generation i fear. I’ve never not known to be anything but paycheck to paycheck in the grand sum of things really. but as they say the more you make the more you spend, so im sure its my fault like everything else the government wants to say is Lol.
I will be using the PSA handguard and barrel nut for the Bravo BBL, will the handguard and nut have any specs in there to let me know the torque needed for the nut?
It depends on the nut. There may be alignment holes or notches for the gas tube. I usually go hand tight and then go to the next spot for the gas tube. No need to gorilla it. Make sure you use aeroshell or an antiseize lube.
I just got some anti-seize, but a friend who is a hobby builder says he uses White Lithium Grease, he claims the anti-seize can corrode if there is any excess…your thoughts
You can order a little 1-2oz jar of Aeroshell 32MS (the replacement for Aeroshell 64) on Amazon for a couple bucks. I ordered some and a bunch of little soldering brushes to apply it. That 2oz should last you a lifetime. Is it better than lithium grease? I don’t know how any of us would measure such a thing, but why not use something specifically designed for medium high temps with aluminum parts.
