Everyone likes to think the worst and worry that we might be under attack. Another possibility is insurance fraud.
I know of a major pork producer that had something like this happen. They have buildings that are pressurized with controlled air environments to keep the hog population disease-free. The service people have to wear bunny suits whenever they go inside.
They had a fire break out right after it was discovered that the population had contracted a viral illness that was wiping out the hogs. What a coincidence.
That makes a good case for the small farmer - then weâre not depending on a small number of large companies that may be suspect to disease (or espionage). Just need to keep the govât from regulating the small farm out of business.
But regulating the small farm out of business is exactly what the Agricultural Investment mega-companies are lobbying for. They have economies of scale that dwarf the small farmer and render them unable to compete, and they solicit regulatory agencies to abuse their power to assure that the small farmer cannot compete. Nevermind that when you scale-up your mega-system it becomes so large that it becomes an unstable ecosystem that is subject to disease outbreaks and wipeouts of genetically identical livestock, they claim that economies of scale are good because thatâs how the money is made â and thatâs all that matters.
I hate the way those people think.
