so way back when rocks were soft and I first started learning about firearms I was taught after you cleaned the firearm you used gun oil on all the sliding surfaces etc. which I have done for decades. so my experience with a CLP type product is limited.
so what I am looking for is your experience of using either a CLP type product and why over gun oil.
I know there are lot of opinions on the internet, most of them are some kind of paid spokesman.
I like CLP products. For one, I do a bit of salt water fishing and it’s great for reel maintenance. On the firearms side it seems to work as well or better than regular oil. If I’m in a hurry and cleaning something not so dirty I have a bottle of half Hoppes half CLP and just use that.
I’m the weird guy that likes to follow the beat of a drummer with 3 arms.
For my classic, purty, wood clad and blued guns, I like to use Hoppes cleaning products. There’s a nostalgic smell to the oil and bore cleaner that brings back great memories of spending time with my dad at the Rod & Gun Club at Torrejon AFB, Spain, back in the late 70s and early 80s.
For my plastic pistols (don’t beat me up too much - I’m currently carrying a Taurus G3 or a Taurus G3C), I use Shooter’s Lube oil because there’s no noticeable smell and it doesn’t seem to stain my clothes. To clean, it’s mineral spirits for regular cleaning and CMC Brake Clean for the deep cycle.
On my scary black guns, I use Mobil One Synthetic High Mileage on all the slidey bits and an industrial high temperature grease on things that are springy and on the bolt rings. I run wet for break and “moist” on my daily drivers. No lie, when I’m breaking in a gun the range will smell like one of my old air cooled VW bugs that I had before I realized that I was a dummy for not having a car with AC.
I’ve never used a CLP. My limited exposure to weapons in Basic Training was…well…in the Air Force in ‘90, so….it was basic qualification with an antique M16-A1 and then on the M92 when I was in Enlisted Aircrew Training. So I don’t have any military experience with weapons maintenance.
Would I use a CLP? I guess so. I’m not a big fan of “all in one “ things, since normally things that do multiple things decently don’t do individual things well. I guess I’m a “show me” kinda guy.
Sorry for the long winded reply here, y’all. I’ve found I can tell the kids and better half I’m doing work emails and mess around here and make them do my chores. It’s been working pretty well so far today.
Over 40 non-stop continuous years carrying guns ( of all types) professionally, Gun oil, automotive oil, CLP, Hopes, REM Oil, ……and I agree with “James the Second”; using the mobile 1 Synthetic has got to be the best !
I have used every type of lubricant….mostly what was issued to me. Can’t say that any lubricant worked better than any other. Science demonstrates that the synthetic lubricants are the best !..…but buying it in small gun sized bottles is prohibitively expensive. Just buy the quart from the auto parts store and you’ll have a 5 year supply.
But…they all lubricate well enough to do the job. Use what you want…it will work.
