GSG MP40 Project

So as some of you may or may not know, i am a bit of a history buff. Especially when it comes to World War II. And honestly money being a finite thing, lets face facts and realize that there are a lot of firearms out there that I will not be able to own due to them simply being out of my reach due to their price, and due to them being full auto, open bolt etc, etc. A lot of these weapons that i would like to own like this are of the German descent. And here you say so what does GSG have to do with World War II German Guns? Well they’ve been quietly over the past few years making .22 long rifle versions of some of the most awesome German guns of the war. This includes the stg44, and the MP 40 both offered in .22 and with a heavy duty wooden case branded with the iron eagle insignia. The whole packaging of them is quite awesome.

Well many guys like me, wished theyd make those guns in a more substantial caliber than just .22 long rifle. and low and behold GSG and their importers ATI heard o ur prayers, and offered us the MP40 9mm Pistol!!! While it is not an exact copy of the original WWII mp40, it is passably a great pistol, but suffers from what all pistol length rifles do, the lack of a brace or stock.

Lets face facts here, to get a stock put on it, which by the way ATI sells for 273.xx dollars on their site when its not sold out, you would then need to invest another 200 and 6 months in for a tax stamp. Who wants to do that? So enter the folks from Custom Smith Manufacturing. They designed and make, an adapter for a 1913 rail, that fits perfectly in the place that the regular stock would have gone. and it accepts, you guessed it, a pistol brace style mount.

So what brought all this on? well PSA decided to throw the GSG MP40 in 9mm up on sale a few months ago, and i just had to jump. so i did. unfortunately the price is not shown when its out of stock as it is now.

Once you have bought your MP40 and picked it up, you’ll need a few parts to get this pistol brace on it.

for instance youll need the Custom Smith Manufacturing adapter its like 57.00 from their site.

then you’ll need the interface (or if you will buffer tube) which looks like this and can be had from their site as well for like 140 bucks (this is where it gets a little costly. )

and lastly you’ll need a Tailhook brace. I chose the tailhook mod1c which is the most compact of them all. I was able to find it on a website for around 105.00 or so. shop around and get the best deal you can. once i bought it i was very impressed. its very well built and solid aluminum.

Once you have all these you’ll need to break out the old dremel, and dremel out the weld for the plug on the mp40, where the factory folding stock would fit because that is where the pistol adapter picatinny rail mounts there. Instead of me re-inventing the wheel i opted to link to Custom smith manufacturings youtube video on how to install the brace. see it here :

GSG MP40 Folding Brace Install

Once all that’s done you’re gonna end up with this :

Well that’s all i got. I hope yall like my little write up. I havent tried firing it yet… i will soon i hope.

Oh ho hooo! NOW we’re talking!

I have a GSG-522 that i SBR’d and suppressed. Soooo much fun. I’m hoping that when I eventually get my SOT it can be easily auto’d.

That’s gotta be a sweet treat at the range. I almost got a tube adapter for a sten mk2 I did just so I could keep the correct bbl length, but in the end decided I’d rather have a stupid tack welded tube in front and the original stock out back. Seeing your results, I’m back on the fence.

thanks guys.

kastaway, the cool thing here is it is still a folder, just instead of underfolder, its a sidefolder now.

I finally scored one Used yet Un-Fired in the box today at a local shop.

When I say scored…I mean I plunked half plus the taxes down , as I’d bought another 9mm Sig an hour prior.

I doubt I’ll be SBR-ing it…but I wanted it in my WWII collection too. Like the OP, I started with the 22LR Stg44 as well.

Just an FYI to anyone thinking about buying one of these.

Buy any Spare Magazines from GunMagWarehouse. $31 Vs $50 plus for the Same OEM Magazine elsewhere.

I purchased 3 25 Round Mags this morning.

I got mine out of Gun Purgatory the following day.

GunMagWarehouse shipped from Texas on Saturday and I’m receiving my Spare Mags via USPS today…not bad considering yesterday was a Federal holiday.

Pic with Leather Sling attached.

looks great.
wish theyd of made and shipped me a wood box like they did on my stg44 .22lr clone

Loaded. By the grace of God.

Very stiff follower and spring. Don’t attempt loading these magazines without lightly lubricating the Magazine first.

Save your fingers. Have a 9mm-45ACP Maglula handy to assist with loading the Mag.

Word of advice to those on a budget and seeking a Home Defense weapon. This Ain’t It!

This Pistol or potential SBR is Purely a Novelty Range Toy, its entirely too quirky to be relied upon when your life or the life of loved ones is on the line.

Keep in mind. This is Not a Combat Weapon…its a Clone that shares absolutely nothing in common with the original article except close weight proximity. Nothing else interchanges at all.

Great post…i will have to look into this. Like how you reference everything.

Sport System Dittrich makes an exact copy of the MP-38, with the necessary modifications to be semi-auto only. They’re expensive, but from what I understand they’re the closest that you can get without buying an original. Here’s a link to the US importer:
