that he was going to put in for a Spring bear license for Wyoming this year.
He was plowing snow with his four wheeler got it stuck tried to get it out and tore his rotator cuff. I just got a text from him that his doctor said he needs to go in for surgery on the 24th of this month to fix his shoulder.
So I texted my 86 year old cousin back “ well I guess that’s the end of bear hunting for this year”
He texted me “No way told him bear hunting was priority. Dr Thought I could be ready .”
Cliché, but they really dont make 'em like that anymore. Or I guess I should say we don’t make us like that anymore, since it’s about how you choose to live, not how life happens to you.
Good on him. Tell him there’s at least one random middle-aged internet stranger that admires his attitude and mental fortitude.
Iam trying to be like him……daily……and for my remaining days that God see’s fit to give me. I am a true believer that if/when we become sedentary….our health begins to decline. We are similar to all the other species of animals out there….stay active equals stay viable and healthy. When they become inactive……it’s only a matter of time until they are pushed to the side by the younger more dominant challenger……or they will become a convenient hot lunch for a predator.
I know it’s only a matter of time for all of us….until we are planted in the ground to give nutrients back to the earth……but until I get to that point, I want to continue to live an active, adventurous lifestyle.
And YES…… I want to be like your cousin….he is my hero !
in my condition now i know i’ll never be that guy… but god i wish i could have been. that would have been so awesome… oh well i’ll have to live vicariously through folks like him.
ya know, the longer i live the more i realize you are right about this. It’s sad, but when you look back on the past 200+ years, at the hardships the people who came before us had to go through,m well we are a bunch of wussies compared to any of them. If you were to take say a smattering of men from today ages 20-40. and drop them in 1774 virginia colony, they’d be screwed… and not even because of the war, just the fact that no running water, no indoor plumbing, no air conditioning, no refrigeration, no gas stoves, no automobiles, no phones, no internet, i mean i can go on, and you can even pick a time nearer. say drop the same guys in 1935, and watch how they react to the depression and the beginning / ending of WWII and see how many survived that. Men were made of much sterner stuff back then i think.
i’m not saying that all men today are weaklings and couldnt hack it, but i am saying that the majority of todays man, is a product of the softer world that has been created by its forebearers, and thus are a softer less rugged and less capable to survive in the wilds … or such is my thoughts.
Agree! Was talking to my wife just last night, we agreed that we and our kids have produced a bunch of wusses! Get their feelings hurt and get PTSD if you correct them. I got my ass whipped when I needed it. Don’t think it warped my mind.
When we got a wupping….I can honestly say that my brother, sisters and I ……we all earned those wuppings……none were given out for free. If I got one…. I earned it. Life’s lessons……there are consequences for everything
& “I don’t know” is not the appropriate answer when asked about the offending behavior.
no doubt about the wuppings. same here… but not even talking about disciplining kids, look at your jobs, how many of us actually have hands full of calluses and leather looking / feeling skin around our necks and anywhere exposed to the elements when working the fields. how many could build their own cabin to live in like they did in the 1700’s? how many could hunt like they did back then for food? hell how many can live off the land now? not many and there a re a lot of dedicated hunters out there now a days too… but you take away the modern firearms and then see how good they are at hunting.
i could go on and on… you get the picture though. todays people are a product of their forebearers making life better for themselves and those who follow after, good times eventually will produce difficult times, and then will produce hard men who then produce good times, which then produce weak men, which then produce difficult times, etc etc and the cycle goes on.
