Anyway, I was at the range yesterday with my pistol and shotgun and mentioned to the range safety officer that I ordered a PSA kit, he rolled his eyes and sighed. You could tell he was like, not another one. I was hoping to get some tips and instructions from him but I guess I’ll have to find another range to test it out and get some pointers. I guess not everyone is welcoming in the community.
With that said I’m super excited to get my kit. I bought an Oops! Kit at the range for $20 so I have that. I hope it ships this week! It can’t get here fast enough.
Welcome to your new addiction! Once you start building you just keep adding new ones on the"To Do" list. I’m sure your range guy has seen multiple builds with backwards trigger springs and other avoidable build errors all you can do is learn. Have fun!
Welcome to the mix. Don’t be surprised if One PSA build/assembly morphs into 10. They are indeed infectious that way.
Now…for your Range Experience… Ignore Gun Snobs whom think everything requires a Desig er namebrand and Gucci parts everything. You bought this project for you and your son and thats all the Validation it needs.
I’m Fastford19692 and Im an AR-15 aholic…I own the gambit of AR’s and Replica Clones throughout the lines history. I have only 4 Actual Colt’s in the bunch…but my PSA Projects are hands down my Pride and Joy as I sourced every single part and put it together with my own two hands…there is something very gratifying in saying so.
Learn all you can…let your son learn with you…that’s bonding that can’t be bought at any price.
Good Luck… We are here to assist you , if you need it?
Outstanding parenting! The boy will love it, and you’ll find a new passion for parting and piecing together new and enjoyable builds. Soon enough, you’ll realize you need a musket a M16A1/4. But then you’ll need some clone GWOT builds, then you’ll see you need an early XM series. You’ll have to try all the flavors, from carbine/mid-length to rifle lengths to ar pistols. Good thing ya bought the oops kit, those detents and spring will drive you MAD, and be lost in the carpet/floor for years to come.
Prepare your wallet… its fun to explore ALL the options. Imo and its just that an opinion… go for the optics first. Just so you can get on target a little quicker.
Also… your son will want his own so get that wallet ready and welcome to the AR addiction
Seemed a bit snobbish when I said PSA kit. I could be mistaken though. He immediately went to, and I guess you want me to help you build it. I said no, I’m going to build it myself (I’m skilled at this kind of stuff, just not ARs, yet), I just want you to make sure it’s safe and good to go. We shall see.
He will. As soon as I told him what I planned and showed him the kit he got all excited. He said he can’t wait to shoot it. I’m right there with him probably just as excited.
Get the 3 pack of PSA lowers. You’ll thank me later. These AR-15’s multiply faster than rabbits.
Get a new RSO. He can shove his rolling eyes where the sun don’t shine…
I have a $1,000 AR from one manufacturer and a $1,500 AR from another manufacturer. My cheapest PSA has had less problems than my $1,500 brand.
I had lots of tools for assembling and a vise. When it came down to it all I’ve used is this below and the “razor blade trick” Never even used the vise yet.
I’m a newbie and it was easy. These dudes will take good care of you if you need anything. They all have guided me very well and helped me tremendously.
Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your first AR build.
Ignore the negatives and embrace the PSA brand. You will not find a better value or a more dedicated team of individuals supporting our 2A.
Take your time and build lifelong memories with your son. Have him get a paying job as soon as he can. The black rifle addiction is real !! Enjoy.
Welcome to the addiction. They are as much fun to build as they are to shoot. The hobby can get expensive. Not because parts cost a lot but because you won’t stop at one; they are kind of like potato chips, lol.
Found a file for a vise block online so I’m going to print that today. I have a hammer and punches but I bought a 1 1/4" castle nut wrench that my torque wrench will mate to.
