I picked up my PSA AK-101AKM tonight and finally got a chance to look it over. Something caught my attention right away. It came in a Soviet Arms box, and while the label shows “PSA AK-101AKM,” the receiver itself is marked Soviet Arms, not PSA.
My understanding was that PSA rifles are usually marked with the PSA logo, and one of the selling points for me was PSA’s warranty. When I check the Soviet Arms lineup, I don’t see a warranty listed the same way, so I wanted to ask. Is this normal for the AK-101AKM, or did I possibly get the wrong rifle?
For context, the only other AK I own is a Norinco MAK-90 I’ve had since the 90s, so that’s my baseline. Disassembly was straightforward, but the top cover took more effort than I expected—the latch didn’t push in enough for an easy pop-off. That might just be me being used to my well-worn MAK’s very easy-to-remove cover.
I also noticed the gas piston sits about 1/4” shy of flush with the carrier and has a lot of movement, aka wiggle. While my MAK’s piston sits flush with no wiggle. The muzzle device also rotates and has a little play. I’m hoping the threads are not damaged, as I am planning to install a suppressor mount and hope the threads are concentric to the bore.
On the positive side, the stock fit is solid, and the finish is clean and consistent across all the metal parts. Overall, the rifle looks great—I just want to make sure everything I’m seeing is normal for this model. Thanks for your input.
