I bought a Ruger 5.7 magazine and cut the notches in. I can confirm, they will work in the Rock.
This is a Ruger 5.7 ProMag that I got from Midway for $22 to experiment on. Mag locks in and the rounds cycle. I’m going to the range tomorrow for further testing.
Well, I hope you have better luck with the ProMag than the rest of the planet….
The pro mag was just for the experiments sake, so if it didn’t work I wouldn’t be out of too much money. I’ve never really had any issues with pro mag magazines, that being said, I would never choose them for my edc weapon but for range guns they are fine with me.
Oh, I know. It was a tongue-in-cheek comment about the less-than-stellar reputation of ProMag.
Maybe I’m missing something but rock mags are cheaper, higher capacity and in my experience more reliable than the Ruger mags…
All valid points, what you’re missing is the fact that the Palmetto mags go out of stock rather quickly and for a somewhat extended period. No doubt there are consumers that will always rather to wait it out. I on the other hand prefer to have options and no doubt there will be others to feel the same.
I had time….![]()
Lol fair enough. I got a Ruger magazine you can have if you’ll cover shipping.
i assume the Rock mags will work in the ruger without modification then,.
how did it go at the range? also are you going to clean the cut up with some files? what did you use to cu t the opening a dremel?
They work fine in the Ruger pistol and carbine.
The range trip was a success. I put 100 rnds thru that mag with no issues. I was surprised it being a Pro mag and all.
I used an angle grinder and some micro files to cut the notches. I did not take much time to make it pretty but any future mags will be done with a Dremel and files for more control.
cool. thats awesome you were able to have success with it. i think thats a great thing knowing how to modify it in case of the need ever arises.
PSA mags are back in stock if you’re in need. ![]()
Do you have dimensions for cutting the notch? I live in WA, so I will have to alter 10 round Ruger or Promags. PSA said they do not have plans for making 10 round mags.
My calipers are OOC right now. You could take bluing (or whiteout) put it on the sides of the mag. It’ll get scraped off right @ where the cutout needs to end.
Tape says 1 7/16ths 1 3/8ths. 3/8ths depth from the forward face of the mag. 1/8th cutter or file would get you there.
Hope that helps.
Thanks for the measurements. Looking forward to getting this. Have wanted a 5.7 for a ling time. 170 for a dagger and rock frame and 200 for a complete upper was to good to pass up.
Thanks again. Much appreciated.
I can put the calipers on it in the am
