Rust?

I just cleaned my new PSA 300 Blackout and was surprised to see what I believe is rust inside the upper and on the bolt above the gas rings. I have put 25 rounds through it and gave it a thorough cleaning after I took these photos. I didn’t take anything apart until I cleaned the gun. I bought the kit in February and it has been in my gun safe. Colorado is pretty dry and my gun safe is at about 34% humidity. I sent an email to PSA and am waiting to hear back. Does this look like rust? I love the pistol but this concerns me…! The forum only allowed me to upload one photo.

You should be able to upload multiple photos. I would be interested to see some more camera angles of it.

My initial impression is that it is not rust though.

It said as a new member I could only upload one. I will try the upper here. I can’t tell what else it would be, it wouldn’t scrape off. Unless they put some kind of protective coating on it? I have no idea…

Kind if tough to make out exactly what you’re referring to in the photo of the upper. To me the whole thing looks very dry though, like it wants some CLP.

Ouch, that upper looks bone dry.

Did you oil it before that first range trip? Did you oil it after those first 25 rounds? Did the ammo you shot have corrosive primers?

Have you ever heard of oil?? :man_facepalming:

That upper is bone dry dude. It’s copper residue that’s most likely being rubbed off from the lack of oil and made its way through the gas system.

Yessir, oiled appropriately. This was after I cleaned it and before I re oiled. Winchester primers…

It was oiled appropriately. This is after I cleaned it and before oiling. I could see some surface rust up a little further on the gas tube.

I had it oiled before shooting. I have literally shot 50 rounds through it so far is all.

Not rust, copper. Aluminum cannot rust. There may be a burr on the feed ramps causing the jacket to be scraping a little. When firing it sends copper through the gas tube and coats the receiver and rear of the bolt.

I agree with that. it looks very dry to me.

Hey guys, it was dry but that is because I was in the middle of cleaning. Well, thank you to all of you for the counsel. I put it through a sonic cleaner and voila, it looks awesome. Thanks again for your time and expertise gents.

Definitely isn’t rust. Rust needs iron and aluminum is not iron. No idea what that brown stuff is.

It doesn’t seem like anything that copious amounts of 10W30 or CLP and some use can’t fix. If it fires and chambers a new round it’s good to go.
