Shoot it or keep it?

Norinco MAK-90 thumbhole stock. Bought it in California before the ban for I believe $249 when I was just a pup. It sat for a bit, then I added a UTG quad rail and a really nice polymer thumbhole stock. The stock required some fitment modifications and required a longer grip screw. Life changed, it sat and sat and sat. It still needs a very small amount of sanding and a screw. I was planning to actually get it going and let her rip. Shes never been fired. I never thought it would be worth anything but the other day I seen these going for over $1000. Should I just keep it a safe queen? I never expected a dime a dozen Norinco to be worth anything.

The only reason I seen that price is I have a beautiful Norinco SKS Paratrooper with a wood Monte Carlo stock that accepts AK mags (not sks detachable mags). I bought that over 25 years ago as well. It was only $149 and the guy said only 1500 units were imported so I specifically bought it to keep and let value increase as it becomes rare. I check the going price every 2 years or so. Recently I was checking the price and I noticed a few MAK-90s popped up in my search for over $1000. Now Im thinking about keeping the MAK-90 a virgin as well.

I guess its a random question. Just wondering what others would do?

My apologies as this is under PSA products. I just realized there are two AK sections. One is PSA and the other is Non PSA. Feel free to move the thread and smack me upside the head…

When it comes down to it I guess is this gun one you are looking at as an investment or as a tool. Thats the cool thing about guns is that they can be both! If you really like it and want to use it then slap a mag in her and let it eat. If you like the smell of $$$ offload it (LEGALLY) and reinvest it into more guns!

Years ago I bought a Norinco SKS for $75, I saw one last weekend at a gun show that was all beat up and missing the spike bayonet for almost $800. I kinda feel that I shouldn’t have sold it. Even if I don’t shoot it much it would be good to keep in the safe, but I know I would shoot it from time to time.

I would keep it until the election. Biden keeps saying they will do an AWB if they win. I dont think they will win, but we all saw how Biden got in office…a ban will make it jump in price.

well i’d have to know if you have other AKs and SKS’s to shoot.

The SKS that takes AK mags is always saught after… I have an SKS too, but mine is a Yugo and it looks perfect. i’ve shot it and it shoots like a dream. I paid i think 250 and now these things are going for over 800 in some places. I’ve thought of selling it, as im kinda downsizing my collection, especially with long rifles that i cannot hold properly without the bipod due to my cancer. heavy guns qualify to be on the chopping block, and the SKS is one of them. But at the same time, I like it cause its an evolutionary gun in the russian line going from the nagant rifles to the tokarev svt40 and then sks, then ak47’s etc… which i have a good representation of each… that said, again, im thinking of selling but i get attached especailly with WWII stuff… so long story short, idk, its a personal preference really… and weather you could use the money elsewhere or not.

regarding the AK, same thing… do you have other aks you shoot and prefer to s hoot. if so, no harm in selling the norinco other than it leaves your “investment” side to sold things side… again, is it something you can use the money for something else or not?

All good points.

These are my only AK variant and SKS.

I never thought about this one point… I bought the SKS to have a rare gun that increases in value. Yet I never plan on using it. So its worth only whats its worth in my own head if I never plan to sell it.

Same with the MAK90, if I save it or let it eat ammo I never want to sell it. Heck I’m more confused now more than ever.

The MAK90 was already through one ban and I had to register it as an assault weapon with the DOJ when I lived in California.

The SKS was outright outlawed in California since it was a detachable mag model. I got a letter from “the man” saying they have records that I bought one.

I could…
Destroy it
Sell it to a class II FFL
Turn it in to the local police
Turn it in to the DOJ
Ship it or sell it out of state

I shipped it out of state to AZ with family and recently got it back since I moved out of California.

Maybe just keep them virgins and buy a new PSA variant lol.

Then one day I’ll die and my kids or wife will sell them for something stupid lmao.

There will ALWAYS be a market for the SKS, particularly the AK-Mag models. Heck, I’ve had my eye out for one, about 3-decades now….

I would shoot the crap out of it. You can always move it later if you have to.

Have one of those myself. Picked it up in the early 90’s for around $200 and haven’t fired mine either. I picked up lots of Russian ammo for around $3 a box as well. I didn’t like the thumb hole stock so I added an adjustable one but had to find an adapter for the slant receiver. Since I have other firearms to “play” it’ll sit in the safe a while longer, hopefully incrrasing in value.

I’d love to change my stock. I have a nice polymer thumbhole because in California we couldn’t put the pistol grip style. I think I’m allowed to now? I need to brush up on my laws in Nebraska. My mind is so full of and polluted with my old California laws. Somewhere I read that if I add enough USA made parts that I can add the pistol grip? But that was a no no in California.

I’m so old school I actually have several 30 round magazines from California before the Magazine ban. We were allowed to keep our old 30 rounds if we had them before the ban, but you couldn’t sell or trade them. Heck nobody would sell them, they were like gold out there.

Two words. No…

Actually this gun is over 18 years old, so Brandon wouldn’t be interested in whispering sweet nothings in her ear.

They didnt come with bipods. They did come with wood furniture and a thumbhole stock. I swapped those out.
