I’m pretty sure my son has a couple Krate units and they’ve worked out well. They’re a sponsor at The Gathering and they get the crap shot out of them and I didn’t notice anything on them there.
Second on Krate targets. I got mine from the Gathering. They may not be the cheapest option but they’ve been great for me. When I went to buy it the year before, they were sold out but would still honor the show price and ship it to me for free. That whole interaction with them PLUS free shipping had me sold.
Walmart delivers all the way out here to me in the country and they actually had this in stock this evening.
I bought 2 rubber bungee straps and I’m going to hang it up tomorrow and give it a go.
Spall can travel well over 50 yards - but typically perpendicular to the target. I have been spattered by lead from adjacent ranges at nearly every Match, that were separated by 15’-high Berms. Nothing [Unduly!] dangerous, just debris falling from the sky…
I have noticed that TA Targets and Taylor Targets now sell pretty-much only mounting systems that tips the top of the target toward the direction of fire, while simultaneously leaving the target loose enough to react to the momentum of the bullet. This seems to mitigate radiated spall better, directing it towards the ground beneath.
Cheapest you can get. My Brother obtained about a hundred cans of paint they were throwing away at his work - and gave me some. They’re only identified by their paint codes, and most are “bland” colours, but some are kinda weird. They all shoot off the target the same as $20 Krylon “Target Paint”.
