Sorry. Could not find any WASR-M discussion here and could not resist the need to start one. Sort of like an AK but shoots cheaper 9mm ammo. A bit crude-looking on the inside but it works.
The rifle in the photo has a US Palm orange grip and an AKV flash can from PSA. The “sling” is just the shoulder strap from a cheap rifle case.
I’ve never had any sort of AK and don’t really want to have another caliber to keep up with. But I also find the Russian approach to modern rifles fascinating. The 9mm WASR-M seemed like a reasonable compromise.
Shoots great, hardly any recoil. Feels and sounds very much like a 22 semi-auto rifle, such as my Ruger 10/22.
The optic and mount were about twenty bucks each and are unbranded except for me writing the brand names on in Cyrillic letters, with a white pencil, just for fun. Maybe you can figure the brand name on the optic.
Btw, the side dovetail mount for optics is pretty cool. This rifle had a piece of extra metal blocking part of the slide rail, looks like someone forgot to finish the machining. If you get a rifle like this and the mount doesn’t slide on, seems to hit something, check for this:
That extra bit in the red circle got filed off and then the mount slide on as it should.
The lumber on this example has been lightly sanded, stained to be just a tiny bit darker and redder than it was from factory (cherry maple stain I think), and given a couple coats of water based urethane spar varnish. Did a rush job on the varnish and missed a few spots, have a couple of runs. You don’t see the blemishes at the range anyway and it feels nice and smooth.
So far I’ve used Magtech, AAC, Federal, and Remington range ammo. Magazines include 17, 23, and 33 round ones from Glock, Magpul, KCI, ETS, and Amend2. No feeding issues at all.
Get yourself some sort of 9mm carbine with AK styling influence. If not a WASR-M, then maybe an AKV from PSA.
UPDATE: finally got a better sling, one that looks sort of like a Russian military one. To me, it just looks better—
