You've heard of the Mini-14 - what about a PSA-14?!?!

Ok - Washingtonian here (State, not Swamp, barely better tbh…) - obviously our overlords want to deny us our 2A rights, and have worked quite hard to do so.

That said, the Mini-14 (which I grew up shooting) is still legal here. It’s a bit of a meme (“I love it when a plan comes together”) but, depending on which model, can be a pretty reliable shooter. And it looks Fudd-ey enough to not scare even Governor Turd Ferguson over here.

But now they’re way overpriced relative to their more modular cousins, the AR-15! And no AR mag compatibility! (Or AK for Mini-30). How annoying…

I guess this is a product pitch for PSA - what about a PSA-14 or PSA-30?! I’d like to buy an excellently engineered, affordable, broadly parts-compatible Mini-14 or Mini-30 clone from PSA, that would escape the ban hammer of Olympia and be as good as the Ruger variant, but with more compatibility (Mini-14 with standards AR mags anyone?!).

I hope this is the right place in the forum to make this pitch (and sorry to the moderators if not). I’ll bet there are a ton of people in communist dumps like WA that would appreciate an offering like this that is capable, versatile, affordable and ‘legal’ (as defined by said communists).

Hopefully SCOTUS gets their act together and makes such a request less compelling. Even in such a scenario - an affordable classic Mini-14 style rifle with PSA’s iconic logo on it would be pretty sweet. Just saying…

$0.02.

A PSA-14 would be awesome! Probably wouldn’t happen for several years BUT there are some anti-2A state approved guns coming out soon that could help quench that thirst. The 570 shotgun and the bolt gun (I think it was called the Emerge?) are the first two that come to mind. Supposedly, the 570 is to be released during Q3 this year but I have not heard any updates in a long time so who knows if it’s still on track or not. The bolt gun…no idea on a a timeline for that.

Reverse engineer an obsolete design with a cast receiver and a cast bolt? PSA is not a casting shop like Ruger, so how much more than Ruger, who already paid for the R&D and the production facilities, are you willing to pay for the PSA brand?
Just talking reality.

Patents and intellectual property are also an issue to consider.

Doesn’t JJE own a forging company now? If so, that is a monumental step in the right direction. Wouldn’t the patents be up by now? Kind of like how everyone, including PSA, does a Glock clone now? If PSA were to make a PSA-14, it would probably be $200 at most cheaper than a Ruger Mini-14. The pricing I think is less of the point. It’s the access in a 2A restricted state. Sure it would be costly but it would still be legal to own versus the ever growing list of banned firearms.

Yeah patent is 20 years, I took a look at Ruger’s Patents on their website and no mini-14. The names I am sure are copyright though but wouldn’t matter if renamed. But I am not an expert on it, I just don’t think it competes very well against the ocean of AR platforms being so cheap. I don’t have a Mini but they are classic and awesome, just expensive to manufacture it seems. I mean they basically took the M1/M14 action.

They do have their own forge. They also have their own shops with CNC machines. They can make a ton of $400 ARs or stop, retool, and make more expensive /different stuff. Stopping and retooling = time and money.

welcome… personally i think you’re barking up the wrong tree so to speak. I feel that a PSA Mini-14 would be more/most likely to appear under the sister company of H&R first. So if anything you’d be seeing a H&R mini-14 and then maybe… if we would be so lucky a PSA version of said gun. I would doubt it though, as if H &R makes it it’s basically like PSA making it these day in my book Either way where ever we go itll still taste just as awesome as it did before having its sister company build it. I say it would be built by H&R as they are the traditional shop who produces the retro guns for us. I look forward to seeing what all they tool up for and build eventually!
