2023 Deer and hunting thread

I’ll open this up. I shot an 8pt tonight. My daughter was going to shoot it but it was facing us, head down behind a doe eating corn. It wouldnt turn broadside and she didnt want to hit the doe (doe season isnt until Sept 15). So i took the shot with her Savage 243Win.

I wish we had an early season. First for us is archery in October. At least we have the entire month for just archery.

By the way, nice deer to start the season with!

Buck season has been open here for close to 3 weeks. She missed a 6pt first weekend, and then i missed an 8 last weekend, which i think was this one i got tonight. 9 deer total in the corn pile, most of them does and fawns.

just FYI today is MidwayUSA’s Camo Tuesday if you need anything. Some descent deals this year.

awesome good job GuitarGuy!!!

I finally got out to go deer hunting this past weekend.

I spooked several deer from stepping on crunchy leaves while walking to my stand only to find this idiot taking an afternoon snooze under my blind.

So being the absolute unit of a hunter I am, I just waited behind the nearest sapling for about 2 minutes for it to wake up and I put a .308 in its ear for the long nap.

110lbs of oinky and I didn’t even have to get into the stand.

some people have all the luck

man talk about landing free bacon… good job brother.

Congrats fellas!!

Not sure how I missed this thread opening up until now. Our season opens next weekend with archery. I am waaay behind schedule and have done very little preparation.

Let 3 bucks walk tonight. All were small. A 3pt, a 4pt, and this spike which was the biggest. Gonna have to beef them up for next year.

Yep. Can’t have any big ones if you don’t let the little ones walk :+1:

Yep gotta up there groceries

Well my kid shot at and hit that Spike tonight. We found the blood trail and searched for 45 min to no avail. Got too dark, so im going back in the morning to see if i can find it and at least get the cap for her. Meat wont be good since it wont get cold enough tonight.

They are actually quite Hardy creatures - if the shot was less-than-fatal, there is a probably 50/50 chance he’ll walk away from it after a time.

If a shot is less than fatal……shouldn’t there be a 100% chance he walks away?

Depends on the injury. Could be a non fatal shot that gets infected and kills the deer.

I understand, just found it kinda humorous how it was worded. I think it would be more accurate to say a shot outside the vitals would be 50/50 survival.
