3/8” AR500 Durability

Is 3/8” AR500 thick enough for 300 Blackout, 5.56/.223 inside 100 yards? Not worried about handguns, just rifle rounds.

Looking to switch over from disposable targets to steel.

Thanks :+1:t3:

Inside 100 yds, 5.56 it may dimple it, but nothing close to major damage. I would expect .300blk supers to do the same, but IDK since i only shoot subs in 300blk.

I have damaged an AR400 target by shooting it with 556, thinking it was an ar500 target. Either color them differently, engrave on the rim, or stencil them to tell them apart.

No matter the thickness, you can only prevent damage to the surface through distance or reduced velocity. The thickness keeps it from warping or creating pimples on the back side.

OTOH, there are two sides to a target, so if you damage one side, flip it and keep shooting.

The issue I had with the thinner plates was damaging the hanger mounts, although I was peppering them with everything up to and including .308. Ended up having to go thicker to keep from using them up. No issues since going 1/2”

I found the same plate in 1/2” for $10 more.

I’ll just go with that.
