7" Marauder vs. 10.5" 5.56

Looking at a new build. I have an extra lower so why not. Going smaller barrel since I have all the other covered 16" 18" and 20". This would be a specific build for something like bug out, home defense, range toy so I know longer is overall better. What are your thoughts?

Do a 9mm PCC with one of their blem uppers. I think it’s a 4” barrel, 6” handguard with a muzzle device poking out

It’s on my list. You’ll need a mag adapter for either Glock or Colt, whichever way you go

Huh… I thought you had to use a different lower for 9mm. Never thought of that. So the 9mm upper will fit the AR lower? If so that me be the way to go. I know the ballistics are crap for 5.56 out of 7" but would still get it done in 50yds.

This is just me, but I won’t go below 11.5" barrel for 5.56 (maybe 12.5"). If I need shorter barrel, I’ll go with 300 BLK, or other caliber with heavy bullet. 300 Blk fits AR-15 lower like a glove

Would a short barrel 300 BLK be worth it if you cannot own a suppressor?

yeah supersonic 300 is still a thing

yeah theres a couple ways, one like he mentioned with the mag adapter

there is a Mag kit from Mean Arms/CMMG that will use the PMAG shell

Well my mind is blown… I had no idea you could convert it to 9mm. How did I miss that. Just went to the old inner web and watched a few quick videos and :boom: I learned something new. Thanks guys

I’m thinking AAC Ammo Co. might be making 300 blk more available/affordable eventually (?). If you can’t get a suppressor, I think it’s still a nice round. For those in over-regulated states, there’s a flash hider that’s getting good reviews that I’m considering for my 300 blk AR called the Bulgarian 4-pc flash hider (here’s a link to the one I got). It’s supposed to add a little back-pressure for suppressed shooting. Another forum member pointed out they’re selling for outrageous amounts on GunBroker (+$400), but they’re $95 brand new from a couple mfrs. AK-Builder has them available in several threadings too (1/2-28, 5/8-24, 14-1 LH W Detents, 14-1 LH, 24mm Bulgarian, and Yugo M85/m92 26mm LH).

I like mine…

So I would say it might be slightly better with a dedicated 9mm lower…

But a lot of those conversions run very reliably, and I wouldn’t hesitate using one.

Down the road, you can always buy a dedicated 9 lower…you already have the upper.

Remove and sell the mag well adapter…you still have your standard AR lower. You’re out very little money. Basically depreciation on the used mag well adapter…

You can’t go wrong :+1:t3:

147g RN ammo is pretty fun out of an AR9

I echo these fine fellas on going too short with a 5.56. I own a 7.5" upper in 5.56, and it is not fun to shoot at all. Besides the overwhelming flash and noise, the blast tends to singe the hair clean from your off hand/arm. I think if I tried to use my super shorty as a HD gun, I’d probably burn the house down as well as blind and deafen myself.
I’m on the 300 BO bandwagon as soon as our fine friends at AAC start producing it economically (ahem, and more throat clearing noises). 9mm does sound fun as well - especially if your state allows binary triggers.

American Eagle .300BO is easy to find around here

its the subsonic stuff that hard to find (and pricey)

but wait, can’t you just pull 1/3 the powder out and save it up for reloads?

(sarcasm there, but then again…)

We’re gonna make a fortune here, bud. AND have all the powder we want! No, not the Hunter Biden powder. Unless we can trade the gray powder…
I hear the dayshift girls like the grey powder as well.
God, I’m overthinking this. I think my sleeping pills are kicking in.
Mommy? Where are my tendies?

might as collect all the spent projectiles too…

I’ve got a 10.5" 300BLK that is fun to shoot. Barnes 110 gr TAC TX is an awesome super round. I dropped a 300 lb. wild hog at about 75 yards with a single shot using this ammo. It is not cheap though. You can find decent range ammo for under $1 a round, but that still is not cheap. I use a linear compensator from PWS for a muzzle device. It does a good job of sending blast effects downrange.

9mm PCCs are a lot of fun. Saves you about 20 cents per round over 5.56 and even more over 300blk. My builds run both ball and jhp. I’ve had several iterations on PSA 9mm builds and they worked fine. Still using a PSA 9mm lower with one of my Aero EPCs.
