9mm ammunition comparison 🎯

Which would you choose for self protection and everyday plinking if you can only have one of these? And why.
Say you are consolidating.

.

With everything else being comparable other than cost and using basic ammo.
4" pistol

.

115 grain jacketed hollow point JHP

147 grain full metal jacket FMJ

.

I changed my answer - twice

You can train with hollowpoints just fine.

Using FMJs for self-defense could have consequences when it comes to overpenetration.

Makes it a pretty easy answer for me.

I have switched everything to 147gr. I like that it is subsonic so whether practicing with a can or shooting without its a little easier on the ears.

thats my choice. as some pistols/rifles can be finicky with jhp. so fmj’s run just about flawless in everything.

I agree and today I’m still leaning towards stacking 147 high and deep.

115 JHP would be my choice out of the two. The reason being that they reliably feed, fire, and eject out of the 9mm firearms that I own. If given the choice in this thread, I would however go with 124 JHP for the extra possible penetration due to the heavier bullet. I presently use this weight because they reliably function in my firearms.

I’ve been back and forth several times and that’s why I made the post.
I also only use 124gr other than for personal defense and that’s critical duty.
Cost becomes more of a factor in large quantities.

Might have a couple 124s around here.
