Academy Ammo

If anyone is in the Golden Isles, Ga region, I was able to pick up 200 round bulk packs of .556 green tip for .65 a round at Academy today. I bought my limit (2), but may send my wife up later to get more.

They ran for .55 cpr two months ago. Watching Academy slowly raising prices to cash in on the market.:unamused:

@tasluk unfortunately it is not necessarily a store issue. Winchester recently put out a statement that they are raising prices due to rising costs in manufacturing ammo. Rising costs are seen across the board and have more to do with the supply/demand and costs of even things such as freight and gas more than it has to do with stores making a profit on ammo.

Academy in Spartanburg had lots of shotgun shells last week. All 28ga. :slightly_frowning_face:

The price of raw goods are up across the board. For whatever reasons (most are claiming echoes of COVID shut downs are to blame, along with the huge govt funded unemployment handouts enticing people to stay home, be lazy, and collect free money), raw goods are scarce and in high demand.

Been to Home Depot or Lowe’s? The cost of a 2x4 has nearly tripled in the last year. Metals are at an all time high. Companies like the one I work for are struggling to get sheet coils to manufacture their products. Welding wire is increasing in cost, plastics are up. Crude oil is up. Everything is up.

Manufacturers will not eat that cost either. They will pass the price increase to their customers.

So… not only is everyone stocking up on ammo —starting with the TP shortage from Covid panic and onto political panic during the election and now Biden declaring war with the 2A; but the companies making ammo are struggling to get brass, copper, lead, nitric or sulfuric acid, or other components in gun powder…

It’s no wonder ammo prices are up and shelves are empty.

Do your part. If you have a year’s supply of ammo, pass on buying more. Local store had .223 the other day for .50/round. Lowest price I’ve seen for awhile. But I passed because I have plenty of .223.

i think we just have to continually check all our sources. yesterday i got Winchester 5.56 at home depot for 10.50 a box. i haven’t been able to get any there for a long time and just happened to be in there yesterday. retailers get it when they do and sell out fast so we have to be on top of it.

I had no idea HD sold ammo. What part of the country are you in?

Academy in Texas was selling 500rd Winchester white boxes for 299.

Somebody is wound up a little tight.
Take a breath and relax.

Lived in Ohio until 1999, no ammo at HD
Colorado from 99-04, no ammo at HD
Louisiana from 04-07, no ammo at HD
Back to Ohio till today, still no ammo at HD

That’s cool that your local HD sells ammo, but from what I see, most of them don’t.

How much ammo do you suppose is a years worth? Which ammo do you stock most?

For me, it has always depended on actual practicing numbers. Say you plan to go to the range once a week and plan to shoot a 50rd box MAX every trip. That’s 200rds per month and 2400 rounds per year.

A lot of non-shooters think that 1000rds is “an arsenal” when in reality, it is less than a range-trip’s amount once a month for a year.

For practice, I buy whatever the cheapest brand is that will work in my most often used guns. A lot of that is steel-cased for the economy of it.
For self defense, i buy one box of different boxes and brands at a time to determine whichever works best in my main defense guns, and once i find the right one, buy or reload about 1k of it. That gives me the chance to regularly run my defensive guns as intended and still keep stuff set aside in case civil unrest finally makes it off the main roads and all the way down to my street, or if I find myself out caught in a bad situation I cannot talk myself out of.
