Hey guys I decided recently that the Nub in the A2 Style pistol grip was too uncomfortable and went to replace it with a magpul pistol grip. I got the screw out and everything without too many problems but I can not for the life of me get the new one in or the old one back in. Is there some sort of trick to this I am unaware of or what? I absolutely mutilated a few of the top threads of the hole trying to screw it in and I am very concerned that if I try to force it any farther I will do irrecoverable damage to the lower.
Try threading the screw into the lower without the grip to clean things up some first. Then feed the screw through the grip before screwing it into the lower. Let the screw pull the grip onto the lower as you tighten it down
Thanks, i did that until i managed to work out whatever stuff was on the threads that was making it not go in. Once i did that i got the grip on with no issues.
good job, hopefully you didnt lose a safety detent
The detent and the little spring were kept safe and sound.
good to hear
Can you tell me what tool you used to remove the screw holding the original grip in?
It’s usually either an Allen Wrench, or flat blade screwdriver
Must be Allen wrench. Definitely not a flat edge. Thanks for the help.
Me too! I can’t seem to find a socket to fit the OEM nut with a crowned lock washer beneath it. I’m thinking 9mm and it’s not in my tool box. However, the grip inside has the number 8. I would think it was an eight but nothing seems to take it off. There is some goop on the threads and I wonder if the bolt is turning. I took the upper off and can’t get to the top of the bolt that goes through the grip. I’ m not sure why a lock tight type agent would be used when a lock washer was used either.
You won’t be able to get to the other end of the bolt on an AR, it comes out through the bottom of the grip. Get a light in the grip and post a pic of what you have?
try a long 3/16 allen wrench
It’s a nut with a lock washer beneath it and it seems to have lock tight on the threads. I think it’s spinning and it needs back up.
Mine has a number 8 beside it. I don’t think getting over the nut was an issue, I can’t tell what sort of nut it is. Is it a castle nut? Update, it turns out that is a star bit in the center of that nut and under it is a crown lock washer I think its called. Thanks PSA family for helping me even though I’m the one that figured it out.
That’s a star-lockwasher, under the head of an allen-screw. “YFS” on the perimeter of the head is the manufacturer proof-mark.
I got this tool set for grips, m-loc addons and optics.

I agree with @TheAirHawk, that takes an Allen wrench probably 3/16” as mentioned above. There’s no external hex to accept a socket wrench. It needs a long Allen wrench, if you don’t have enough leverage you can hook a small box end wrench over the short end of the Allen wrench for a little extra oomph. I can post a pic later tonight if you’re more of a visual learner?
I’m laughing at myself after seeing that set. I always just reach for an Allen key for the grip screw. I have hex wrench sockets and bits right next to the keys but I never think to use them unless I’m installing scope mounts with the torque driver. ![]()
Yep, It turned out to be a star bit also. Not an Allen head. The replacement screw is a flat tip. I just couldn’t see it was not a hex and caused all this trouble. I apologize to PSA for cussin out the AI bot also. ![]()
Update, it turned out to be a star bit, I love the PSA AR and the upgrade, thanks to everyone for helping. PSA sorry I cussed out the AI bot if anyone actually sees it. ![]()
