Anyone have a line on if PSA intends to put out an upgrade/update to the bolt catch so that it can be manipulated a little easier?
I havent heard of anything from PSA. Taccom makes an acccessory bundle but you can’t buy things separate.
edit: wondering if you could just find the right screw and use a modified safety selector…
Appreciate the reply, I was wondering the same thing about a modified switch of some sorts but the machining may be janky unless you’ve got some good tools. Doubt I’d buy that kit even if it was in stock though.
I wouldnt want the whole kit either. I think I have a safety selector that I can cannibalize and try. I’m thinking that with a hand file I can grove the back of the safety lever and get it to line up with the ridges on the bolt catch button, then all I have to do is add a screw.
Then it just comes to the leverage required and enough contact points to keep it reliable. Good luck though, I’d love to see the results.
Gunsmithing 101…although I don’t use a Dremel. The screw helps provide the leverage transfer, this will be a work in progress.
I found the thread pitch…went through my container of random bolts and found one that works. Gonna run by True Value and get the exact thread count. I also marked with tape to show how far it threads in.
I went by True Value and got the correct screw. Also found this plastic shelf pin that looked like it might work. Total cost was $1.07. Painted the shelf pin ODG and reemed the hole to fit the screw. The pin has a nub on the back which helps prevent it from rotating when I put pressure on it. I reached out to a company that makes individual safety levers as I would prefer metal over plastic. Awaiting a response so this will do for now.
That’s pretty dope. Good find! I might hit mine up tomorrow, and maybe break out the Dremel and a bit of aluminum block soon. What’d the pitch end up being?
8-32 x 3/8"
I’m a new AR-V owner (but not new to PSA ARs) and appreciate this discussion. My AR-V has been excellent thru the first 100 rounds (accurate and no failures) and I like the fact that is uses Scorpion-style mags since I already have 6 of them. However the bolt catch/release is my disliked feature; it is basically impossible to operate to release the BCG. I’ve oiled it thoroughly, manipulated it numerous times with the upper removed, tried it with gloves, but it just doesn’t offer enough purchase to allow the BCG to be released to chamber a round. It certainly makes me appreciate the paddle on the standard AR! That said, the GuitarGuy’s posts give me hope that there might be a reasonable work-around. I’ll look into it and also hope that PSA comes thru with a workable alternative.
Since I posted this in the wrong thread the first time, here it is again
I know you already found a similar solution, just posting for others.
I was in the same boat and found the release very difficult, even with two thumbs on it. I guess that’s the prices to be paid for not having it release when inserting a mag.
As long as you have the right bolt, you can pretty much do whatever you want. In my case, I found this piece of hard plastic in one of my bins (I think it’s actually a spacer for mounting LED/LCD monitors/TV’s to a VESA stand or wall mount).
It is very sturdy and makes operating the release MUCH easier.
I appreciate the OP starting this thread and the replies.
I sent my ARV back because the bolt release was frozen. It would not move even when I pushed a dowel down on it.
They sent it back saying they changed the barrel and now the cases would extract. Only problem is, I never had a problem with the cases extracting, nor was it a problem I reported. They returned the gun with the flash hider gone from the installed barrel (bare threads), and what looks like maybe the old barrel tossed into the box.
The bolt release will work now if I lay the gun on my lap and shove the release down with my strong hand thumb as hard as I can.
I think I’m going to find a bolt release solution similar to those posted here, and hope PSA is willing to mail to me a flash hider and call it good.
Yeah mine goes forward if you just put a magazine in. I wish mine was harder.
Mine is strictly a competition gun. I need it to lock the bolt back and hold it back until I hit the button. Having it not work properly is a good way to lose a stage.
Send it in if you need a repair.
Any updates on this? It looks like I have a frozen bolt catch! I can’t get it to release no how!
So I am having trouble, the bolt release wont send the BCG forward with or without a mag, did anyone else have these issues or know of a solution?
Is it new?
it is
