AR10 Carbine Optic Recommendation

So I recently picked up a Springfield saint victor in 308. It has a light 16 inch barrel and was really made as a “battle rifle”. I currently have a vortex strike Eagle 1-6, but am looking to get something different. It’s not that I don’t think 1-6 is a good mag range for a rifle like that, but I really want something to take full advantage of the 308 cartridge. What magnification range for an “all purpose” 308 would you recommend that still takes advantage of its range and accuracy?

I’m a little biased because I love Leupold, but my 3-18 X 50MM VX-6HD is awesome for shooting out to a 1000 yards. Vortex offers something similar in the VIPER PST GEN II 5-25X50. My advice is get something that has at least a 30mm tube and a large front lens. Magnification can really come down to user preference but having that large field of view is priceless.

Primary Arms 1-8x24 FFP w/ACSS Raptor reticle is a versatile option, when they aren’t sold out. BDC for 5.56 and .308. Hard to pass up that option for the price. Anyone can easily reach out to 500+ with something like this. In reference to energy at target, you wouldn’t be very effective long distance anyway, with that setup, so I don’t see much concern in that area.

I like this idea, however a 16inch 308 only loses 50 ft lbs of energy vs a 20 inch at 1000 yards. I would never plan on shooting this gun that far anyways, but certainly could be done in theory. For me I’m thinking 600-700 yards max. Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll look into that one.

You can see mine in the pic thread. I use a Vortex Strike Eagle 1-8. I have found it to be a good optic up close and at distance. I use a 12.5" barrel.

I do like that nice compact setup. How do you feel about 8x magnification? Do you think it would be enough to make 600 yard hits on a 16in barrel?

Most certainly. As long as you’re going for on target accuracy, and not extreme precision, 8 power is more than adequate, regardless of scope choice.

Worn out M16s with the 4x acogs can punch minute of man boxes all day at 500 (proven through personal experience). 8 power is more than enough, with proper fundamentals.

Awesome. I guess an lpvo might be the route I head then. Now it’s just a matter of finding the right one!

That’s the fun part! There are so many great, affordable optics these days. The biggest deciding factor for me is which reticle setup makes shooting at various distances easiest.

@Jrodlavoie no issues with 8x mag with distance. I love the reticle also.

I just put an ATIBAL X 1-10X30FFP on my Sig 716 and love it. Tracks well, great light transmission, illuminated reticle is “almost” daylight bright. Atibal X 1-10x30 FFP – Atibal Optics

Only negative was a little difficult finding a 35mm mount.

Interesting. I’ve heard mixed reviews on that one but it seems like a really solid optic for the money. Especially the magnification range

Really happy with it so far, haven’t had time to really wring it out yet. Only complaint so far (and it was no surprise) is on the higher magnifications field of view is a bit restricted. But any LPVO with a 30mm or smaller objective lense is going to have the same issue.
