Attempting to get my range to allow 5.7x28

I had posted earlier that my club which operates a “pistol only” range currently bans 5.7x28. I’m asking if anyone who manages, operates or is a board member of a range that allows 5.7x28 is willing to share their experience with this cartridge. I will be asking our board to reconsider their prohibition.

If you’re willing, please private message me with your reply. It would be helpful if you could address 1.) that 5.7x28 poses no greater risk of ricochet that common pistol calibers, 2.) that 5.7x28 does not excessively destroy steel targets and 3.) the increase of 5.7x28 on your range.

Our range is outdoors and the backstops are dirt berms. Thanks.

Well, that sucks.

  1. I’m not sure why anyone would consider the 5.7 to be a greater risk of richochet. Any round can richochet and I know of no reason why the 5.7 would. It can’t be velocity because .357 Sig hits velocities of up to 1700 fps, similar to the range for 5.7.
  2. I don’t know whether or not 5.7 is particularly hard on steel targets. I don’t shoot my steel with it and the range I usually go to doesn’t have steel and won’t let me bring mine. There are a bunch of 'toobers shooting steel with the 5.7. HonestOutlaw is one and I’ve seen others. Often they seem to lack the kinetic energy to knock over a falling plate. You might volunteer to do testing for them; buy your own steel and shoot it, documenting the process for them to see.
  3. The range that I usually go to doesn’t have much 5.7. As far as I can tell it’s myself and likely only one other person (I will sometimes find once-fired brass which I know I didn’t shoot). I think this is because, while gaining in popularity, the 5.7 is still a bit of a niche cartridge and is comparatively expensive to shoot. But I have seen that it is definitely growing in usage.

Peace favor your sword,
Kirk
