This is another topic that interests me. What is your ideal bug out bag and gear in your bug out bag. Also what bags and packs do you edc as well, do you have a get home bag?
Here’s my bug out bag and contents of the bag
The bug out bag is on the right. The largest of the three. The middle bag is my get home bag which has pretty basic stuff including first aid, water purification bottle, and the Kel-Tec sub2000.
The haversack is my edc bag, I throw in the truck if I’m heading into town for a few hours. Also has a first aid kit, extra mags for my dagger, extra batteries for my flashlight and extra fire starting capabilities.
Sheltering in place here.
Bug out bag is basically a backpack with IDs and hotel cash in the event of a house fire, or something similar where we will need to leave the house, but not town for a few days. That scenario is more likely than anything else in my life.
Only other things in it are a change of clothes, water bottle, and flashlight. I should probably throw spare car keys in there now that I think about it.
I hear that. Doing “The Road” thing at my age and health ain’t happening, same with the wife. We’re set up to last the first attack… after that, VALHALL calls!

I don’t blame y’all tho. The bug out bag is mainly a very very last resort. My end goal if shtf is to get to my dads farm. My 2 acre plot isn’t much
I will admit that this is a very interesting topic.I like the “get home” bag. I need to up my game in that respect. I do carry a winter survival bag in the truck. I could update that for all seasons.
Yeah the get home bag for me is water bottle with built in filter with 2400 calorie meal bars, extra mags for dagger and keltec sub2000 and first aid kit and a few other things like fresh socks. I rarely go further than a 24 hours worth of a walk away from home.
While we are on this topic, what are thoughts on flashlights and batteries for a bag like this? Batteries in general? For example, I carry a GMRS radio in the truck but it uses a rechargeable battery pack. If crap does hit the fan, the power grid may not be available and the radio does not use “traditional disposable” batteries. In my flying days, I carried a Sporty’s radio that came with an empty battery box that allowed you to load it up with AA batts or use the included rechargeable batt.
Some of us old guys are watching and may or may not have Gen Z kids that get it. Please keep posting. Not necessarily old but that damned blue tag makes for a problem.
Flashlights & battetied…
LED with rechargable/disposable battery option. Some AA, AAA (cary a few sets of replacements) & CR123A with 18650 option (18650 rechargable in light + 2 reloads of 123A.
Lots of places sell solar backup battery like the patriotsupply sells. I got a few off the shelf on clearance, 5,000mAh with solar or grid recharge. Newer options have 10,000mAh battery. Usb out with whaever connector you need to your gadget.
The solar pannel on these is anemic, Bout 2 days full sun to recharge the 5,000mAh battery.
I did notice a dramatic slowimg in charge to device once the back-up battery hit 50%. Test your gear as, your milage may vary.
Other option would be a dynamo hand crank, though I’ve never had good results with one.
Lastly, there are some good recharge packs that fit multiple types of batteries, disposable & rechargable. Ive not used any.
For me, with flashlights, I have some that are high end USA made to low end Amazon cheapos.
With that being said, I prefer a smallish flashlight, even in SHTF situations.
Especially one that takes 14500 batteries. The flashlights that usually take 14500 batteries can interchange with AA batteries. That way you have the ability to hold off on solar charging if you don’t have the option to solar charge at the time. Plus you’re gonna find AA batteries along the road or scavenging around your community.
Got dozens of firearms and tens of thousands of rounds of ammo. If things have really fallen apart to that degree, I’m gonna take someone else’s bag. Or he’ll get me, and either way I won’t have to worry.
