Im needing to get a new range bag or assault pack that will accomodate handgun and rifle mags…throw me some suggestions or lemme know if you may have one…my good one was lost by twa on my flight back from Afghanistan when i flew into el paso tx and was lost so im stuck using my trashbag from wally world. Need something decent
Ya’ll would laugh at my range bag. But I cant wait for this thread to take off. I’m super curious of the tacticool stuff Ya’ll got. Hopefully most of you post pics.
Edit: my supply/accessories bag is pretty old and outdated. But actually my rifle bag is jew and decent come to think of it. I have several rifle bags and dont set them up. I’ve come to realize it’s best (for me) to use one bag for all my rifles instead of having a bag for each and every rifle.
This is just a suggestion for temporarily while you find something. I am currently using an old Targus laptop case. It has a pretty strong and wide shoulder strap, which is helpful.
I typically carry in this bag the following:
a. three or four 9mm pistols with at least two mags for each (one in pistol)
b. about 200 rounds of ammo
c. two pairs safety glasses (one prescription)
d. muff style hearing protection plus some in-ear plugs
e. a few small tools
f. a rag
g. sometimes a few AR mags and some 5.56 ammo
h. magnifying glass (my old eyes don’t see well in dim range light)
Lots of zippered compartments and some internal dividers in some of these bags. If you have an old laptop bag laying around, one that zips open on top like a soft briefcase, maybe look at that to get you by until you find THE perfect range bag. The decent shoulder strap is probably the best part; it’s pretty wide for bearing all that weight without cutting into my body. Even if you go direct for a new bag, if you have some other case or bag laying around, it might have a better shoulder strap than the new bag.
I wish i still had mist of my tactical bags n stuff after it was all said n done…sadly bills came first and i had to sell most of my stuff. Kids are expensive
For years my “range bag” was an old briefcase, with genuine pleather on the outside. Very stylish. I still use it for storing some gun stuff, like targets and holsters. Just one big compartment so everything is jumbled together but it held 200 rounds of .357 ammo, two holsters, a bunch of targets in the lid pouch, hearing protection, glasses, shooting glove (don’t), mags and speed loaders, etc. Then the hand guns got transported in a separate hard case with that egg carton foam stuff inside. My case holds about six .357 revolvers if I lay them out carefully.
Now I use the leather laptop case for handguns and miscellaneous stuff. For the ARs I have two cases large enough to hold a carbine length AR 15 with an optic and 30 round magazine. Both cases have pockets on the outside for extra mags. Both have that really annoying velcro crap for closing the mag pouch flaps. Both of my cases are cheap, about $35 each. One has three pockets, the other has five. I think PSA sells a nice tactical case with mag pouches AND a larger pocket for other stuff??
I really should get one double case for hauling two AR15s plus some mags. Maybe in this thread I’ll see some recommendations for that.
Kids are expensive, wifes are very expensive.
I could bless you with either one of these 36" PSA rifle bags. Never used in the original plastic. You can even pick my Black or OD green one.
Edit: Disclaimer, AKs and mags not included ![]()
I couldnt ask you or anyone else to do that brother. Its not thag big of a deal just trying to get a good idea of something that i could possibly edc or that would be beneficial to keep in my truck while im at work or just general day to day use plus take it to the range. I would like to keep files, punches , my small armorers hammer, torx tools, micrometer and some other tools along with pistol and rifle mags, ammo, and other odds n ends
Lately, I’ve been leaning toward Not-Tacticool-Storage for transportation of Firearms and Firearms Ac-cessories (/Hank Hill Voice).
Walmart is the Mortal Enemy of Middle America - but we can use their disdain for us to our advantage.
I picked up a couple of these - they were $30 originally, now just under $20:
Hard bottom, fairly deep, loaded with pockets. They’re in every dang store. Usefulness to someone may vary, but they’re cheap enough I’m giving one a try. Probably going to sharpie the “Hart” embroidered logo to mute its origin, or carefully razorblade it.
There’s cheaper ones too - but not with the rigid bottom:
As always, mileage may vary, all models over 18, not responsible for loss due to theft, fire, hurricane, or acts of god. May cause irreversible explosive diarrhea, or burning flatulence.
Straight from wally world. Inexpensive but it’s more for toting around the house when I’m tinkering.
Gloves?

Old backpacks work great as well. Like @TheAirHawk I try to avoid anything that screams “gun inside” by passing on anything with a tactical look or feel -molle is way overrated anyway.
When my kids were in school they seemed to go through backpacks like nobody’s business. I grew up poor so never throw anything away. Thus the heavily used ones with laptop compartments double really well as range bags -having Spiderman on the cover is just an added bonus. I’d like to think folks looking to steal something from a vehicle won’t find a kids backpack as appealing as a Molle covered Molon Labe tacticool operators asset holder. ![]()
This thing lives in my truck with some extra mags, tools, and maintenance items. Also have some spare batteries, flash light, gloves, pens, tourniquet, and a small ouchy kit in it. Bridges the gap of a range bag and EDC pack. Plus it easily fits under my seats.
This would be perfect
Im going to attempt to go out in the wild this evening and see if i pick something up. Would love to find an edc/range sling pack or something but we shall see
You might find a rucksack.
My wife and I both have them for bug out bags. WM has some that are decent and want break the bank.
i use the PSA rifle cases that Cali posted for rifles, and for the pistols i have a PSA range bag i bought a few years ago, i looked on their website but didnt see it there anymore so i’ll have to remember to take some photos of it when i get some time.
Harbor Freight has some zipper top tote bags for as little as eight bucks. Here is the fifteen dollar one that I assume has pockets on the inside.
Also I have some small bags or soft cases, plus rigid plastic ones, that can be used to contain small items like file sets and then put into the larger bag. My rifle case has weird lining material that velcro hooks cling to, so I hot glued some velcro hooks to a small zippered bag (like a mesh front pencil case but smaller) and just stick that in the rifle case. The little pouch contains small allen wrenches and other small items, like an extra range flag. I an move this pouch from one rifle case to the other.
I know it’s not tacticool but I also use zippered freezer bags sometimes to contain small items like spare barrel thread protector so these items are easier to find in the bigger bag.
Also saw a fun novelty item in a luggage store at the mall today: luggage tags with large letters that say things like “not yours” or “handz off.”. Maybe it’s not an issue but in a room full of black nylon range bags, I can sorta see putting a tag on it.
Oh yeah, don’t over look the second-hand stores. I got a really nice Eddie Bauer bag at a thrift store years ago for like three bucks. I used it at work for years until it finally wore out. It had pockets inside and out, plus holder for my coffee travel mug, cell phone, lunch, everything. Then I used it as a tool bag for a while, then a travel bag. Never found another bag with a setup as good as this one (for me) but I adapted to the Targus laptop bag that has become my range bag.
And as for backpacks, I still have a genuine Jansport from college, complete with real leather bottom. Hauled like 25 pounds of books in it for five years. I think these old Jansports were made in USA too. (Yes I carried it the “right” way: by one strap.)
I can’t stop laughing. The video, hot glue gun and the Janson bag. Dang I guess we getting old
.
yes but we remember the truth: that “the good old days” were really better in some ways. they can edit the internet to change the history in front of you but they can’t edit human memories, or all of the paper books out there safely beyond reach of the computers.
that’s why businesses went to electronic newspapers: the printed version is in your hand and nobody can claim that the words printed on the page never existed. Fortunately, we still have sites like archive dot org and their “wayback machine” that archives snapshots of just about every website. You can even go back and see how much ammo sold for at PSA five years ago.
