CMP Reproduction M1 Garand

Curious to see what everyone’s thoughts are on this new reproduction offering from CMP.

CMP M1 Garand

I have a CMP M1 Rack Grade rifle that I won in a raffle years ago from a local gun store, and I absolutely love it. It’s a 1945 Springfield, new barrel and new fore end, all else is original. (As far as I am told).

I love shooting this gun and there is just something about the nostalgia of having a rifle that is as old, or older than, a lot of peoples grandparents.

I think there is definitely a market for this rifle offering from CMP, though I think the price tag is a little high, I am interested to hear from everyone else and also would like to take a little survey on caliber offerings you would like to see CMP offer in the M1.

I was reading that article yesterday. $1900 estimated sounds steep - but we’re talking an essentially Limited Production firearm (no matter what the article says - they cannot produce these on a scale like Ruger or PSA), with a Limited customer base.

Speaking of, look at the MSRP of your average Marlin/Ruger, or the reissue of the Mini-14 folder. A spanky-new-exact-copy of the Garand Rifle at that price point is a relative Bargain, when the CMP is turning out sometimes well-abused (but well-refurbished!) examples for ~$1000+, that are often resold for 150% to 300% more.

I’ll almost certainly have one of these, because I want to SHOOT one, and I don’t want to feel guilty about beating on a piece of history.

I don’t think it will be a super limited run. There are millions of parts laying around for these rifles, i think the biggest hurdle will be the receiver forgings and barrels.

As far as a limited customer base, I don’t think that is a fair assessment of their following. They are always selling out of M1s that you can buy through their program, along with their in person stores you can go to and buy rifles and pistols from, they will always have a customer base to sell to. And, like you, there will be a lot of people that will buy one to have so they are not “ruining” their M1 originals.

I’m very excited for this, minus the price tag, but I will also plan on buying one. Eventually

The Run isn’t going to be limited - it’s planned for ongoing, continuous production. It’s the Capacity of the manufacturer that CMP has partnered with.

The new Receivers are Forged and cnc-machined, not cast, btw.

I never saw the question asked on the website if it’ll bite (aka give a Garand Thumb) to any unsuspecting shooter. Could be a deal breaker if it didn’t. All kidding aside, I’m not sure the price is really that far off of Springfield’s M1. I wonder if they’ll be producing clip stock to keep them fed.

Heritage isn’t really a small time mfg, I don’t think they are going to have any issue keeping up on a demand as long as CMP and their suppliers can keep them stocked.

And yes, my mistake. I am well aware of the process of making firearms, I misspoke and corrected it.

Yeah, but what self respecting 2A supporter is really going to support a company, Springfield, that wanted to throw the entire community under the bus when the dems came knocking?

Certainly not me but my point was I believe there’s only around a $25 difference in the prices.

The collector types probably will want nothing to do with it. For those living in the repressive places where detachable box magazines are forbidden, the Garand remains a very effective quick-loading rifle. It may eventually lead to other variations on the basic rifle.

Like the idea, but $1900, while probably reasonable, is too steep for me. CMP already offers original receivers with new barrels and stocks for $1150.

I’m sure there will still be those collector types that buy one just to have one of the first runs of them and then sell them here in 20+ years as a “collectors item”

I haven’t seen anything that would confirm this, but, my speculation would be that these new reproductions will not be picky about ammo. As far as not being over pressured and having the possibility of damaging the rifle with new high power ammo.

I would not buy one especially at that price point. I would much rather buy a real USGI M1 Garand. You can buy a USGI M1 Garand from the CMP with a new Citerion barrel if you are wanting a really good shooter. A real USGI M1 Garand will always hold their value better than a reproduction. I am a collector so what I want won’t be the same as someone who just wants an M1 Garand and doesn’t care about having an origional USGI Garand.
