Traded away one of my Winchester M1 Garands today

Found a trustworthy carpenter and needed some work done to fix my rip-off GC homebuilder’s crap. He noticed that 1/4 of my garage was ammo, so I showed him a bit of my stash.
He said " is that an M1 I saw in there?" I said, “Yup, I got 5 or 6 around here somewhere.” He said he’d always wanted one since he was a kid and would barter my repairs for a rifle.
Well, I still had 2 Winchesters, decided to bargain that and a couple cans of M2 ball (had three sealed crates from my CMP days) on clips, a stuffed butt compartment and some bonus extras like a launcher sight, sling etc.
Kinda sad for me, but I’m gettin old and can’t take 'em with me. He was delighted and wanted to know everything. Looks like a good home. We’ll do some range work when it warms up.

while i do not know your age, i’ll take your word for getting old. Since you had 2 winchesters, i can understand being able to barter one off for work that you need done. I much prefer to barter things when i can instead of paying cash. I’ve done that with a few things before myself.

that said, it does sound like you found a good steward for the winchester. I pray that he takes as much pride in his quality of work, as we do in the importance and quality of the m1 garand that he has received. you’ll have to keep us updated with what all he had to do and how well he has done it all when its complete. the fact that you are going to spend some time with him on the range is a great idea and i think will only make you feel more comfortable with your decision to barter off that one rifle.

I understand being saddened by losing the one old girl, but in the end it sounds like youre doing the right thing for the right reasons… so i say to your carpenter, welcome to the world of M1 Garands… Please introduce him to the m1 garand collectors association. he can join the club and learn a lot about the addiction.

Wow, thanks for that reminder. I’ve been sending him links to info and forgot the Collectors Assoc.
Oh, BTW, he learned the carpentry craft at Steinway building piano’s to sub millimeter tolerances. He’s damn good, and honest.

Currently a garand on gunbroker for 1 cent. 8 days left tho

but its a .30 cal

you’d be better off joining the cmp as a member and ordering your rifles there for sub 800.00 last i checked, and you can order bayonets and ammo for them there too along with alot of other items that are cool and needed.

plus these weapons from the CMP come with a certificate of authenticity tht is in your name and all that too… its pretty cool. i’m telling ya if youve ne ver heard of it or been a member its the way to go if you’re serious about getting a m1 garand

I’m not sure what “better off” you’re referring to. These are CMP rifles I’ve acquired over years of shooting in matches etc. If you’re trying to down me for passing on what I’ve earned with participating within the CMP rules, then You have a great misunderstanding of the process. Have YOU EVER participated in a service rifle match with an M1? Why is every social media forum occupied by the “I’m better than you” crowd? Golf Foxtrot Yankee. I’m done here.

Uh, outside perspective here, not involved in this exchange at all, but I’m a little confused by your response here. Gamecock was just referring average223enjoyer to CMP to get his hands on a Garand, nobody was insulting or downing you.

um i think you are confused. I wasnt speaking towards you so i apologize for any confusion there. I was speaking towards @average223enjoyer as he said he NEED ed a garand. so i was trying to point him towards the CMP and how they are great folk and can get him into a garand easily for less money than he’d find one on the used markets… hence he’d be better off going to the CMP. So again, im sorry for the confusion there I was not aiming my posts towards you.

as for your trade, and logic, i think it was wonderful, cause you also made another guy a fan of the rifle and mayhaps he’ll respect the history of it as much as the fun of shooting it. I have 2 i had gotten from the CMP, myself, but i dont think i was buying them as early as you were cause i missed out on the real inexpensive ones back in the day… when i bought mine they were in the 500 dollar ranges… .i know they were much more inexpensive than that years ago. personally im envious of you having so many of them compared to my 2. In fact i’d of loved a winchester as both mine are springfields. I wasnt trying to down you at all. so please do not think that. Another point, you’re right i have never participated in any of the CMP matches, and now with my health i doubt i will be able to, but im content to shoot my garands every so often when i can. I dont know where you thought that i was “attacking you” or that “i’m better than you crowd” but i assure thats not here… and i’m a little offended that you’d think so without first asking about it, and then telling me to GFY… that was uncalled for. Like i said when i began, i wasnt speaking to you, iapologize for you thinking that, but i dont know where you get off on the wrong side of the bed to speak to me in such a way. If you’re done here, thats fine, cause you may not fit in if your first instinct is to attack someone who wasnt even speaking to you, and furthermore you attacked a moderator, which really doesnt earn you any good points… especially since im one of the more laid back ones.

that all said, I’m willing to overlook this, depending upon your next post towards me and what you say.

Thank you @Don_Keedix he kinda blindsided me too… maybe he had a bad day. we’ll see if he responds.

So many other message boards have people that jump on others, and I understand where he’s coming from. I hope he comes back and says something good cuz we all want to get along on this board for some reason - I have no idea why  Hearing about the CMP program is fascinating and it sounds like he has a lot to contribute. I like to go with more standard stuff nowadays - maybe modern. There’s nothing like an old M1 Garand! I know someone that has an old International Harvester and it’s beautiful.

yeah i hope he comes back too, we’ll see.

i love the CMP and love the whole reason they’re in business. besides you can get awesome war historical weapons… sometimes you get lucky if you are there at the store when they open after a restock, they may have 1903’s and m1 carbines and 1917’s as well… so yo u can get lucky sometimes… and thats not including the awesome varieties of m1 garands they have in stock usually too.

i had no idea where he was coming from, as i had thought that the conversation had progressed past his post and iwas replying to someone totally differently.
oh well. we’ll see.

I am so heart broken im not that carpenter! een though i do the same thing for a living!LOL Im not 59yrs old and have wanted one of these since i was a kid. My Pop’s fought in the war and brought home a couple of Mausers ,one of which i have. I started a WWII rifle collection ,its going ot be a 6 long gun. I have three a Carcano,No4Mk1 and the Mauser. I need an M1 ,Nagat and an Arisaka. Right now i cant afford the 1st two i need but the Arisaka’s are not crazy right now so searching for one of those? I have had a short list of dream guns all my wife since i was about 11yrs old. My Pop-Pop would take me to the gun club to shoot clays with a 12guage ,no 410’s here for us kids! lol In our family a ,Military one our manhood came with 12guage bruises on the sholder! LOL I use to plink with a Remington 22 that was made of plastic, but i forget the exact mocel. It look a lot like a Crossman 766 pump BB/Pellet gun! LOL it took a bottum fed clip and i would plink milk jugs full of water at 50yrds! But then the military after high school. But i never got into the guns after that for some reason? But about 6or7 years ago there was quite a few daytime home invasions and i had ot get a handgun for self defense. Well my 1st range trip was all it took and i was hooked. I havnt looked back! I love the hobby and cant wait to get an M1 and i may even after finishing my 6gun WWII collection still get a Carbine? My short list is the m1 ,a Springfield 1911 already have that! :>) A Mauser and already have that. The last couple are a nice cowboy revolver with the belt and everything for fast draws lol and a Thompson Machinegun, although it would have to be a semi-auto of course! LOL but i have ot get the 6gun collection done as my POP’s was gonna do the same but only had the rifles he brought back from the war as he worked hard to support not only his three kids but later a few of us grandchildren. I want to get that collection together in his honor. I think he would love it!!! :>) Thos there M1s you have are nice looking guns you should be proud and giddy like i would be? LOL Just love the history of WWII and hearing the stories my POPs told me ,made me interested in it even more! Now as an adult i still get like a kid when i see anything WWII related?!?! LOL great stuff! Was awesome of you to do what you did!

I’m, with you when it comes to loving wwII and loving all the firearms associated with it. You forgot the M1 carbine though!

it sounds like you are well on your way to fullfilling your pops’ dream and yours about having one of the major rifles of each of the main participants… i was doing that too, but i had to let some of mine go this past fall to pay down some of my medical bills. I had sold my 1903, and my 1917, and my SVT-40… i miss them, but it was the right decision for me at the time… i also had previously sold my enfiled no4mk2. im sure if you keep at it youll get those others you need for your collection.
I think its awesome you have your pop’s bring back rifles that is too cool… my grandads didnt bring anythign home from the wars like that, but one brought back a pair of dueling percussion cap french pistols (black powder) and i have those… they’re pretty neat. I’ll never get rid of them one day i hope to build a shadow box for them. Anyways, its nice to find another WWII fanatic!!!

+1 here for the M1 Carbine.

@GamecockOperator I must complement you on how you handled that. I didn’t understand it at all and had to re-read to make sure that I understood correctly. @pilot4prophet, Craig please understand nobody was attacking you at all. In fact @GamecockOperator, Steve was complimenting you and was wishing that he had as many M1 Garands as you do. In fact I am a little jealous as I would love to have 5 or 6 Garands. I now have 2 M1Garands but I have acquired other Milsurp weapons. At the end of the day this is nothing but a misunderstanding. Having said all of that @GamecockOperator, Steve is a laid back moderator and he is really a very nice guy once you get to know him. I hope that all of this can be put in the past and move on from here. None of us wants to see anyone leave especially over a simple misunderstanding.

It’s been a year since his last “GFY” reply but l hope he reads your reply Greg. Total misunderstanding in respect of Steve and it bothered me how quickly it went south. I remained silent until now. Bad day for him maybe…we know the bad days that you, Steve and others that push through yet continue on.
There is a faithful member l am concerned about that we have not heard from since last December and that is California refugee. I reached out to him a month or so ago but no reply
I hope he is ok?
