I’m a big FN Herstal / Browning Fan. When i first started getting into firearms as an adult back in the 2000’s I found that I had a lot of guns made by FN that I would love to have. My problem was like so many of us they were priced very high compared to my budget that I had for purchasing firearms. Back then i had the thought that 300.00 guns were about the highest amount of money I could spend on any said gun, and as sad as that seemed In order to purchase my very first handgun I had to put it on Layaway at Sportsman’s Warehouse because 650 some odd dollars was just an immense amount of money that I did not have just to blow back then on a Glock 21, which I had chosen to be my first handgun I ever bought. Soooooo… as i got further into the realm of Firearms I was drawn to FN Manufacturing, which is based here in Columbia SC. Through a mutual friend My brother and I were lucky enough to find out they did Tours of their manufacturing plant, and we went on one.
This tour opened my eyes to the wonderful world of FN firearms. I fell in love with many of the firearms they offered knowing i’d never be able to afford many of them without saving for a long period of time… and even then, some were so expensive in my mind they may as well be unobtanium. things like the FNS2000, the PS90, and the new FN Scar 16, and 17, and the M240, m249, and not to mention the cool pistols the FN FiveSeveN, then 9mm’s and the FNX45’s and all the others they showed me. I was in love with the brand from that tour, and what really sealed the deal was the fact at the end of the tour they gave you the option to buy any of their guns that they had on hand there at a severely discounted price.
The discounted price after the tour had me in its palm. I bought 2 guns that day, because i had just sold one of my cars. I bought the FNP-9, DA/SA with every bell and whistle that it came with, in black. The one i thought it’d never afford though was the FiveSeveN in OD Green… I was lucky enough to get it for somewhere around 630 some odd dollars if memory serves. (the FNP9 was only like 300 something. I couldn’t believe it that I got 2 guns for under 1000.00 … I found out then i was a big sucker for FN products after that, and slowly via trading, purchasing from online auctions and firearm private sales, and gun shows, and back then even Facebook gun groups, all slowly helped me obtain some of my Halo guns that i thought id never get. and Usually i got excellent deals on them too.
However, I’ve had a dream gun/ halo gun that I’ve wanted ever since I saw them back in early 2008. and every time I thought I’d be able to pick one up, something came up, or the price changed for the worse. That said, it finally happened this week. I was able to finally get the top of the hill gun that I’ve wanted the most. The FN SCAR-H or as us civilians say the SCAR-17 NRCH in 7.62x51!!!
I really didn’t know which way I’d go in the choice of FDE or all black, if I had to choose which to buy, but since I got it from a private party, there was no color choice to be made, it was what it was… and it is black. the longer I look at it and handle it, I’m kind of glad it’s black instead of the FDE, I feel its kind of the more rare one, instead of the FDE, which I think the majority of people tend to be after and buy. So now I have reached Unobtanium and I am planning the build. Its going to be a DMR style setup i think. I’ll keep you all posted on its building as I go…
Anyways, if you’ve stayed with me and read this whole thing, I thank you, and because you have stayed here reading, heres the porn. ![]()
My SCAR 17s NRCH does not have the magpul AFG that is pictured on it, anymore. (it was the previous owner’s grip) but does retain the FN SSr Stock, which i learned from FN’s site store is quite pricey from them. The longer I have it with that stock on it, the more it’s growing on me, and the more fitting I think it is for the plans of being setup as a DMR rifle. Some things I plan on doing to it are :
-
- A short handguard extension that extends the handguard past the gas block and flip up front sight.
-
- A bipod for the front of the rifle
-
- Of course, I’ll swap out the trigger with the Geiselle Super Scar Trigger… it’s a great 2 stage trigger.
-
- A sling of some sort. I don’t know which one I’d like to get yet, as I may put other mount points on the rifle by changing out the front handguard. The stock I have doesn’t have any QD points on it, so that too is something I’ll have to look into.
-
- A vertical forward grip of some sort to mount on the bottom of the front handguard that wont interfere with the bipod I add.
-
- A scope. I’ll probably use my Vortex Strike Eagle 1x8x24 that I currently have and see how I like it on this rifle
-
- A scope mount, for now i’ll go with the Vortex Sport Cantilever 30mm Mount that I have mounted to the Strike Eagle 1x8x24 that i have currently.
-
- A new Grip to replace the standard m16a2 grip. I have chosen to put on a BCM Mod 3 in black as i like their look and feel and the storage area inside the grip itself is a bonus as well.
-
- A flashlight. I will need to choose some form of Flashlight that i want to put on it. Any ideas are welcome.
-
- I will also need some form of a AN/PEQ-2 or its replacement the LA-5/PEQ. (those both are NOT cheap, but from what I’m seeing nothing involving this SCAR thing is cheap its evidently a very expensive club that I’ve joined.)…
and finally…
- I will also need some form of a AN/PEQ-2 or its replacement the LA-5/PEQ. (those both are NOT cheap, but from what I’m seeing nothing involving this SCAR thing is cheap its evidently a very expensive club that I’ve joined.)…
-
- As ridiculous as it is, I want the original Ugg shoe boot buttstock just in case I want to swap it back and forth. Unfortunately the original owner had sold it once he put the SSr stock on it.
well that’s about it for me now… I’ll try to post photos as I update the rifle, and hopefully we can have a lot of discussion in this thread and I’ll hear from those of you who already have SCAR’s and those of you who don’t please feel free to add to the conversation too! Thanks for reading this whole long thing. I’m sorry I have rambled on, but I’m excited as all get out, at reaching this objective. Its truly another bucket list item of want’s I can finally mark off my list!
