Any FN Fans?

I’m a big FN Herstal / Browning Fan. When i first started getting into firearms as an adult back in the 2000’s I found that I had a lot of guns made by FN that I would love to have. My problem was like so many of us they were priced very high compared to my budget that I had for purchasing firearms. Back then i had the thought that 300.00 guns were about the highest amount of money I could spend on any said gun, and as sad as that seemed In order to purchase my very first handgun I had to put it on Layaway at Sportsman’s Warehouse because 650 some odd dollars was just an immense amount of money that I did not have just to blow back then on a Glock 21, which I had chosen to be my first handgun I ever bought. Soooooo… as i got further into the realm of Firearms I was drawn to FN Manufacturing, which is based here in Columbia SC. Through a mutual friend My brother and I were lucky enough to find out they did Tours of their manufacturing plant, and we went on one.

This tour opened my eyes to the wonderful world of FN firearms. I fell in love with many of the firearms they offered knowing i’d never be able to afford many of them without saving for a long period of time… and even then, some were so expensive in my mind they may as well be unobtanium. things like the FNS2000, the PS90, and the new FN Scar 16, and 17, and the M240, m249, and not to mention the cool pistols the FN FiveSeveN, then 9mm’s and the FNX45’s and all the others they showed me. I was in love with the brand from that tour, and what really sealed the deal was the fact at the end of the tour they gave you the option to buy any of their guns that they had on hand there at a severely discounted price.

The discounted price after the tour had me in its palm. I bought 2 guns that day, because i had just sold one of my cars. I bought the FNP-9, DA/SA with every bell and whistle that it came with, in black. The one i thought it’d never afford though was the FiveSeveN in OD Green… I was lucky enough to get it for somewhere around 630 some odd dollars if memory serves. (the FNP9 was only like 300 something. I couldn’t believe it that I got 2 guns for under 1000.00 … I found out then i was a big sucker for FN products after that, and slowly via trading, purchasing from online auctions and firearm private sales, and gun shows, and back then even Facebook gun groups, all slowly helped me obtain some of my Halo guns that i thought id never get. and Usually i got excellent deals on them too.

However, I’ve had a dream gun/ halo gun that I’ve wanted ever since I saw them back in early 2008. and every time I thought I’d be able to pick one up, something came up, or the price changed for the worse. That said, it finally happened this week. I was able to finally get the top of the hill gun that I’ve wanted the most. The FN SCAR-H or as us civilians say the SCAR-17 NRCH in 7.62x51!!!
I really didn’t know which way I’d go in the choice of FDE or all black, if I had to choose which to buy, but since I got it from a private party, there was no color choice to be made, it was what it was… and it is black. the longer I look at it and handle it, I’m kind of glad it’s black instead of the FDE, I feel its kind of the more rare one, instead of the FDE, which I think the majority of people tend to be after and buy. So now I have reached Unobtanium and I am planning the build. Its going to be a DMR style setup i think. I’ll keep you all posted on its building as I go…

Anyways, if you’ve stayed with me and read this whole thing, I thank you, and because you have stayed here reading, heres the porn. :stuck_out_tongue:

My SCAR 17s NRCH does not have the magpul AFG that is pictured on it, anymore. (it was the previous owner’s grip) but does retain the FN SSr Stock, which i learned from FN’s site store is quite pricey from them. The longer I have it with that stock on it, the more it’s growing on me, and the more fitting I think it is for the plans of being setup as a DMR rifle. Some things I plan on doing to it are :

    • A short handguard extension that extends the handguard past the gas block and flip up front sight.
    • A bipod for the front of the rifle
    • Of course, I’ll swap out the trigger with the Geiselle Super Scar Trigger… it’s a great 2 stage trigger.
    • A sling of some sort. I don’t know which one I’d like to get yet, as I may put other mount points on the rifle by changing out the front handguard. The stock I have doesn’t have any QD points on it, so that too is something I’ll have to look into.
    • A vertical forward grip of some sort to mount on the bottom of the front handguard that wont interfere with the bipod I add.
    • A scope. I’ll probably use my Vortex Strike Eagle 1x8x24 that I currently have and see how I like it on this rifle
    • A scope mount, for now i’ll go with the Vortex Sport Cantilever 30mm Mount that I have mounted to the Strike Eagle 1x8x24 that i have currently.
    • A new Grip to replace the standard m16a2 grip. I have chosen to put on a BCM Mod 3 in black as i like their look and feel and the storage area inside the grip itself is a bonus as well.
    • A flashlight. I will need to choose some form of Flashlight that i want to put on it. Any ideas are welcome.
    • I will also need some form of a AN/PEQ-2 or its replacement the LA-5/PEQ. (those both are NOT cheap, but from what I’m seeing nothing involving this SCAR thing is cheap its evidently a very expensive club that I’ve joined.)…
      and finally…
    • As ridiculous as it is, I want the original Ugg shoe boot buttstock just in case I want to swap it back and forth. Unfortunately the original owner had sold it once he put the SSr stock on it.

well that’s about it for me now… I’ll try to post photos as I update the rifle, and hopefully we can have a lot of discussion in this thread and I’ll hear from those of you who already have SCAR’s and those of you who don’t please feel free to add to the conversation too! Thanks for reading this whole long thing. I’m sorry I have rambled on, but I’m excited as all get out, at reaching this objective. Its truly another bucket list item of want’s I can finally mark off my list!

SCAR-17 is on my Bucket List!

Like you, I really never thought I would ever obtain an FN Rifle, or the P90 - yet a few months back, I stumbled across a heckuva deal and got myself the P90.

Some day, I will obtain the SCAR as well, and I Congratulate you on your success! Rock On!:metal:

Awesome rifle! I’ve only seen the “FDE” version - the black is really nice. The SSr stock is remarkable! If I can ever sell my LMT 308 MWS, I might consider one.

I kinda wanted a FAL, too - and had an opportunity about three years ago - but the PRICE for that heavily-abused example… :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Interesting? My first handgun purchase was a G20SF also bought from Sportsman Warehouse on Piney Grove.

I’ll say this, my 509 is easily my favorite 9MM pistol, even compared to my CZ75’s, Walther PDP, M&P, etc. It’s kind of heavy for what it is. Expensive compared to other competitors, but it just shoots so damn well, and is very easy to be accurate with, and get quick follow up shots as it shoots very flat. It reeks of quality with excellent sights, metal components like the mag release, etc.

I’m definitely not a fan of how FN bought both Browning and Winchester, and then shipped their manufacturing to Japan, Portugal, and Turkey. I really very much do not like that. That’s like sending Ferrari production to China, or Corvette production to Brazil. Not cool at all, especially for the very high, premium prices that X-Bolts, Model 70’s, and Model 94’s command.

Dear Abbey………Funny timing………I for some odd reason have been seriously eyeing up an FN-15. I’ve got plenty of ARs………wife, daughter and I each have our own plus complete spares :innocent: My last AR I pinned together was on the jack-o-lantern meme lower and the 14.7” p/w FN barreled upper. It’s a great shooter……love it. Plus I’m working on the AK acquisition since my recent relocation ……….but I’m really wanting a complete FN carbine…….please, send help :yum:

Yeah as i mentioned it was on mine as well.

I’m still in denial about having it. I say that because i think that it is insane to spend almost 4k for a rifle, yet here it is sitting on my build station looking at me in all its glory. lol. I felt the same way when i got my first FN high dollar weapon. That one was the FS2000… I still have it, and love it, but this Scar is in an entirely different galaxy when comparing them. lol. How do you like your PS90? I love mine… i have one of the ones with the green stock, and while i havent modified it or gotten it stamped and cut down (which i bet i never will) I Love taking it to the range and having a little fun with it too.

i’ve found for me the only way i can get these type of high end weapons is to trade out for them… and i’ve been very fortunate to get and make great trades on my end.

if your like me i’m sure you can get a SCAR sooner or later. and I thank you for your congratulations!

hehe yeah i know y ou are… just like me. I dont think im interested right now in making it a short barrel… but i’ll think on it!!!

Thank you!.. Yeah in the beginning i was kinda sad it wasnt FDE, but the more i thought about it, the FDE is all you see… so having the black one is kinda more rare, and thus kinda makes me want it more… so i’m very happy with it being the black one.

the funniest thing is at first i hated the stock… i had no idea it was even a genuine FN Stock. then i looked at FN’s site in their e store and realize 1.) how damn expensive it was, and 2.) that it was not only their stock, but one that they use on their 20s, … and since im kinda going with a DMR kinda setup on this gun, im thinking more and more that the SSr is more appropriate than the UGG boot. Even though i kinda wanna get a replacement boot just so i have it.

I wish you luck selling your LMT308. I suggest putting it up on armslist to sell or trade… thats how i got into this one. I traded my sig for it.

Funny story, i had always wanted a FAL, for the longest time. Unfortunately a buddy i had passed away, and his wife needed help liquidating his collection. So i took on the task of selling everything. He had a very nice DS Fal with case and everything, and i had first dibs obviously. But when i picked it up out of the case, i realized how bloody heavy that bastard was. I think it was heavier than even my M1 garands are… That said, i quickly came to the conclusion how much i wanted it versus my ability with my strength and body that i have since i’ve had cancer, i just couldnt lift it well, or carry it easily, etc… so in the end it was just too much for me. So i ended up selling it for her to someone off armslist. 8 years ago i’d of kept it. Oh well. one of the sad things that happened when i got sick is i dont have the strength in my lower lumbar back regions… luckily the SCAR is not as heavy by far.

yep that is the one i got my g21 at. small world indeed!!

I agree. the 509 is just “right” for me. I cannot explain why, or how. damn fine weapon though. I cant wait to get a 509 Tactical compact. i feel a little smaller would be perfect for conceal carry.

I’d not known about the things they did when they bought browning and winchester. that is news to me about the shipping of manufacturing off overseas. thank you for informing me of that. I’m not a supporter of that at all either… It somehow doesnt surprise me with them being a foreign owned company anyways. but still i dont approve of it at all. Heck them building the guns here in SC is one of the only reasons i ever looked at them to begin with, and one of the major reasons i like buying their guns is because it says “Made in Columbia, SC” on the sides of them

uniquely i wan the FN Carbine US military collector gun. so i’m right there with you. If i can find a few for us i’ll definately let you know!!

Yes…….the military collector is the one I’m pondering. I’m currently working on selling off most of my racebikes, and WILL get one once i make a few sales. And I readily admit it will be for bragging rights

About 25 years ago my brother and I were doing contract networking jobs and we were contracted to update the network in that plant. I was a recently Departed(honorable end of tour)from the Army, now veteran, and walking around in that building was amazing.

yeah there are 2 versions, 1 is the m4 and the other is the m16a4 versions. I personally think i want a M4 version of their military collector line because of 2 things. 1 I already have a PSA clone i had built back when i first started building of a m16a4 that is as close to a clone of his boot rifle that he carried /was issued all throughout boot down in Paris Island. it even has his actual sling he had bought for that rifle while he was using it, and i was lucky to find some used parts that were also from being used by the corps or the army that had been over there in the sandbox… most namely the forward handguard which is knights, and the vfg as well, and the backup sights as well. so i think i’m good there on the m16a4 clone (even have a bayonet just for that build)

my m4 that i want from FN doesnt really have to be the full rifle. . If i could find someone with one, who wants to sell the complete m4 upper from one i’d be good to go, because i already have picked up in a trade to someone a complete FN lower with the military collector barcode for them there on it. so i know its from one of those military collector editions that fn makes. now just to find that upper with the fn upper and CHF barrel and a2 flash hider. if it comes with the knights handguard, / drop in quad rail thats best, but if not, i can always find one somewhere ellse used… either on gunbroker or possibly ArfCom.

thanks for your service Rustygray. i appreciate that.

and you are right it is amazing. I first experienced it by walking in there as an employee of UPS having to work on their “worldship” computer system that we had installed. it was nothing major just a little pc with a small label printer. later i would learn of the tours offered and get on one. quite awesome to be truthful. I was amazed then at every thing… my most favorite part of that was being fortunate enough to have been there at the time that they had built and were testing a vulcan off the front of the a10’s … we were no where near where they were doing it, but man it shook the whole building and was insane!!! i’ll never forget that.

I’ve owned a PS-90 for a number of years. I have a PSA Rock in 5.7 headed my way to pair up with it.

My brother in law had a p90 (issued). FN supplied different pieces to his team/squad . He liked it for the select fire, but said it was just too awkward for him. There’s an episode of Modern Marvels?……on history channel about modern weaponry, and they were the featured team demonstrating the FN stuff.

oh i bet that was awesome for your brother inlaw to do in the deonstration. i love my ps, i can only imagine the goodies they issued hi that were select fire stuff and what not… i’d of loved to have been a part of that.

I’ve asked to come along to their range where they train, but I always get a non-answer  It’s only 25 minutes from my MD house, and adjoins the property to our counties larger landfill.

Greentop just outside Richmond, has their outdoor expo this weekend. FN is there, and I spent time drooling and fondling everything :innocent: I’m curious now about comparison between their military collector vs the Sabre m4a1. Plus, I wasn’t really thinking about a different pistol than the daggers, but their 22 pistol has me interested.

honestly you should also check out their 509 series… the standard 509 i have, and absolutely love the gun. I recently added a 509 tactical, and it fits just as good in my hand even though its compact. (as long as i use the longer mag with pinky extension) and the ergonomics and accuracy for me was phenomenal.

Yes, those were nice too. I kept going back to the FN booth again yesterday at the expo we were at, and the 509 is definitely on the want/need list. We’ve only got one 22 pistol, so planning ahead on a 2nd, just no idea what to get. Ours has been pretty good for what it is, but would like a factory built…….and the 502 seems like a viable option

i’ve got the 502 on my list as well. but like all FN products, its pretty dang pricey for a 22.
what .22 do you have currently in pistol format? I’ve got a couple of GSG pistols, a clone 1911 Sig Sauer in .22 and a gsg version of the sig sauer mosquito pistol as well. I find they are great little pistols. I forgot i also have a Heritage Revolver in 22 lr, but it also has a cylinder for 22 magnum so i can swap between them.

P80 g19 frame, but with oem Glock parts. Advantage arms conversion kit. It’s not horrible actually. It’s 95% give or take reliable with cci 40 grain minimags. Typically out of a 100 round box of those we will get around 4-5 ftf/fte. It’s angering with any LRN bulk ammo  But yes, the 502 would be pretty costly for a 22. edit:it’s really good for teaching how to clear malfunctions, if nothing else
