I would like your opinion and thoughts on a AR15 to 22LR conversion kit
Buy the CMMG kit.
Shoot a few rounds of .223/5.56 through it, then Clean the rifle when you’re done with .22lr at the range.
Be Happy.

I’ve debated the CMMG kit for awhile, which apparently works well, but I don’t know that I want to run 22 through a good rifle. A dedicated upper, or even the full S&W 22 AR, isn’t that much more and wouldn’t be crapping up a good barrel.
I haven’t had any issues with mine. Only run plated, no LRN, and run a couple 5.56 through after. Clean it when I get home.
mine works pretty well, it is a bit messy but I actually like cleaning my guns so there is that. Personally, though, I am convinced I would have been better off with a dedicated .22lr upper with a more accurate barrel than a 1:7 twist.
I have an old Ciener Atchisson kit. Years ago had a butler creek 10/22 carbon fiber .920 10/22 barrel turned down for an ar 15 extension. It still uses the chamber adapter and it is super light and fun to shoot.
My only complaint is there needs to be a mag loader
I have 4 30 rd mags but they are a pain to load compared to butler creek 10/22 mags with the crank loader.
I remember someone use to modify ramline loaders to work with the metal mags.
10/22 gets more use and is easy to clean once you drill a hole for the cleaning rod to go through from the back of receiver.
I plan to have a full .22lr upper.
Someday.
Same reasons as BradE.
CMMG makes a dedicated 22LR barrel, and so do others, probably. I looked on Brownells out of curiosity, and the conversation kit and barrel (1/16 twist) go for $313 at the moment as a combo.
But, for that money, plus the rest of the parts to complete the upper you’re looking at maybe $500 all-in for a dedicated upper. Or get the conversion kit with your existing suboptimal barrel. Maybe peel lead off into the gas port and/or foul your barrel. Is it worth it? I can’t get myself to say it is, but I really want it to be. For that price, though, there’s options that seem better. The slightly-off-mil-spec S&W M&P 15-22. A 10/22 of whatever flavor. However many rounds of cheap-ish 5.56 ammo.
Or a complete rifle
one thing I want to add though about my conversion. Inside 50 yards it is accurate enough for playing around. Usually nothing but one ragged hole in the middle of my targets. And another thing, people near me when I’m shooting say it sounds like it’s a suppressed 5.56. Kind of a cool benefit.
I have the BCA 22lr 16 upper , runs great, I use suppressed ammo with a 22 can and it is very quiet and reliable.
also have the cmmg adapter I use with FA binary lower and a basic 556 upperI bought without bmg etc-- since i started using a can and subs it is very very fun and neighbors don’t hear anything. Mags dont last but a moment!
THEY RRRR GREAT
i wonder if they know when people tell you to buy the CMMG kit, im pretty sure it is exactly a clone of a Ceiner kit.
i have a dedicated upper. they are different in that they are 16 to one twist. that is said to be better for a rimfire bullet. they also dont have the piece that fills the chamber part of a 556 barrel. i bought it after using a ceiner kit with an 11.5 inch barrel. you might have to take some time tweeking but it will be fine.
i would say the dedicated is better but i have not used it very much. i am not being conceded i hope it doesnt sound like it but this is true for me, i use my machine so much more than any other gun. i have a ceiner kit with a 6 inch barrel that i cut just in back of the gas port, its gone. my sparrow suppressor just does come out of my 12 inch rail.
really, when i go to the range i take the auto lower a 556 upper and that 22 upper with the can. anything else may or may not even be fired. there are auto mag dumps on my u tube. Davidautofull@youtube.com.
nobody has told me i cant put that site on here, is it ok?
have one that I have used in everything from 7.5 to 16 inch barrel length. Best$170 you will spend.
plus has 3 mags, clips, or bullet holdy thinges…
It’s just too dang Bad you lost all of that in a Tragic Boating Accident…
The CMMG kit works fine. I would guess that accuracy would drop off after about 50 yards but I can’t verify that. Your AR is probably 1:7 or 1:8 twist and a normal .22lr is usually 1:16. That has to affect bullet flight at some point.
