Damage from inadequate recoil buffer

see attached picture, i’ve only shot about 165 rounds of mild ammo and saw this damage after my last cleaning. what the heck??? i can’t imagine how much damage there will be after a few thousand rounds. hard to tell in the picture but the deeper indention is probably 0.050 deep. anyone else have this issue? should i send my gun in for service? thanks

You should send it in for service. Contact customer service for assistance. Unfortunately, customer service is not here on the forum.

Yeah just contacted customer service and they’re going to create an RMA. It hasn’t even left yet and I’m already missing it!

Got my AKV back from PSA. Quick service and complimentary shipping each way. They said the damage was normal, an answer I don’t find satisfactory. They did give me a spare part to replace the original. My guess is that recoil may cause the piece to bump off the piece that releases the dust cover such that, when the next round is fired, it gains momentum before slamming back into the piece that releases the dust cover. A better design would have larger contact area so that the load is spread out and lower. I hope i don’t have to replace the part every 1000 rounds because it is already pretty battered after only 165.

That wear is completely normal. I have over 9k rounds through my competition AKV. Mine looked the same after the 1st 100 rounds through the gun. It still looks the same after over 9k rds. No additional wear.

Thanks Rconpatriot. That makes me feel better.

I’ll take a picture of mine tomorrow and post it here. Mine basically just has the finish worn off.

Sorry this reply is so late.
Here is my rod and buffer after around 10k rounds.
Note, I did install the Tacomm buffer after around 3k rounds.

Same here.

Any significant changes since then? I’ve put a few thousand rounds through my AK-V, and it looks a little worse, but I’d have to agree that it’s “normal.” Eventually, it should get smashed in to a degree and then stop and not get any worse. That’s where I’m at.

PSA sells new recoil spring assemblies for 29.9? if you need to replace it.

After around 1K+ I have not seen similar wear patterns as you have shown, but the rubber buffer keeps separating and leaving a 2-3 mm gap between it and the metal part of the buffer system.

This raises concerns of possible wear or stresses on other components so I am switching out to a Rifle Dynamics monolithic rubber buffer.

Pretty sure the force of the bolt hitting the buffer will close that gap.

Been a while since you said you were switching to the Rifle Dynamics monolithic rubber buffer, how has it been?

Sorry for the delay, I am enjoying the RD buffer and prefer the recoil impulse better than the stock 2 piece PSA buffer.

Hasn’t changed reliability or accuracy, only time will tell as to how it affects wear.

Actually noticed that the gap on the stock buffer would get wider over use, the rubber piece would slowly slide forward along the spring.

So far I have <1,000 rounds with the RD buffer and looking forward to seeing how it holds up once I have my Hux Rad 9 on it.
