Did some knife smithing today

I bought this Skallywag Privateer a few weeks ago and love it…except the weight:

Decided to see if i could mod it a little. I checked with Skallywag to see how the pins were put in, they were loctited. So i used a heat gun to heat it up (opened the blade and covered it so the heat wouldnt get to it) and was able to remove the rear metal spine of the knife.

As you can see, it is pretty heavy. Using black and blue G10, i first created a new spine with a bigger lanyard loop:

Shaved about .5oz off the total. Installed it, but didnt love it. It was my first attempt and by no means perfect.

Played around a little more and ended up deleting the lanyard loop all together. This was my 3rd attempt. The 2nd attempt i had a hole walk as i drilled it.

A little gun oil and the g10 shines.

dats nowt a nife…now this…this is a …sorry, couldn’t resist. Only thing I made was the paracord lol.

I am truly humbled by anyone undertaking any sort of blade craft. I won’t even attempt it. Nice piece and your attention to detail shows. Your G10 stuff is same color as my factory Colt Competition Series 1911 VeeZee grips (wich btw are WAY overpriced). I’m sending all my worn out folders to you! I hate the tiny screws that keep coming loose no matter how much loctite I put on them!

Hey everyone! …look!..blade smith in the house…send it! …

Excellent Skill. I always look at something and wonder how it can be improved……eventually I become obsessed….I draw out plans and next Iam committed to modding it. Nice to see someone else has the same “compulsive improvement syndrome” that I have.
Great mod….great skill. Great eye and imagination to see that it can be better……and the guts to “go for it”.

I finally weighed it, saving .5oz. Not too shabby. Balance is more centerline now also.

Gotta SOG kukri, love that thing when i need it.

Dope lookin knife

For 25$? Can’t beat it. I use it for minor clearing of lanes when I host “off-road” steel plate shoots in the boonies. Find a spot, call the boys w/ co-ord’s, set up plates before they come at random ranges, etc. in the middle of nowhere…good fun. And it’s also great for scaring off tweakers eyeballing my stuff at public ranges- “ya wana keep that hand? BACK OFF” lol.

You must know someone- they are perpetually sold out! Nice sticker. Great job holmes.

@hoosky125 they are sold out alot. I think they still have some blem models though.
