Did some work on the Sabre AK

As I mentioned somwhere else I wasn’t a big fan of the stock and grip colors of the rifle as it was delivered. So I went with an odg green B5 stock of the same model. I was going to do the same with the grip but had a US Palm black AK grip on hand so I used that and I like the feel and look of the grip so I’m keeping it. Matched the color with a black BCM foregrip. Also added an fde vortex crossfire red dot. Pics to follow…however to wanted to mention some info for those interested in doing the stock swap.

The swap was easy, remove the 4.5 mm hinge pin, remove the stock replace with new stock. Or so I thought. The new stock wouldn’t lock in the open position and would just flop around. Upon further examination and comparison between the two, it seems a lot of fitting work was done to allow the original stock to lock in the open position (pic to follow). So rather then grind and file away at the new stock’s receptacle, I swapped out the hinge assembly and was good to go. Only evidence is that I have a small peanut butter colored portion of the hinge right at the hinge plate. No big deal.

New stock works fine, still has the magnetic clasp when folded. All good.

UPDATE: Took the rifle to the range today. Ran like a champ. 300 rounds, no malfunctions using a combo of steel and brass.

I was able to 1/3 cowitness with the red dot (which is a good thing, this dot is a dud) and the irons were zeroed from the factory. Kudos to PSA for that.

Need to figure out something for a cheek weld on that stock. It is not awful, but would prefer a little more height over the top of the stock. Suggestions greatly appreciated.

wow.. thanks for the heads up on the custom work on the stock hinge.. your photos really show what they modified so totally see what you were saying. I love those rifles.. but i think if it were me id keep the Ral 8000 stock and grip.. but to each their own.. it looks good with both so its just a preference. that said glad to hear the positive range report too… sorry aobu tyour red dot though..

keep us updated what you figure out.

OK, I am totally oblivious. I read your comment about keeping the stock and I was thinking…what’s he talking about all I did was change the color. Then I looked a little closer and the stocks ARE different - lol

I literally handled both while I was working on the rifle and idn’t even notice. In my head I was like B5 systems collapsible stock, it looks the same. Now that I am FINALLY seeing the differences, I like the shape of the original as well. Might be time to rattlecan and reinstall.

I know you are partial to the original FDE color, but I am telling you if the color of the grip and stock in real life appeared the same as they do in the top picture (the one on the white table) portrays it, I would have never swapped them out. However, the true color was far more yellow then tan. Just look at that little piece of the stock OEM hinge poking out near the rear trunnion, that yellow color you’re seeing was the actual color. Difference was the top picture taken under flourescent lighting, the lower outside in natural lighting.

That color is Ral8000 and is used by lots of German stuff, mainly HK.

Like Hal 2000’s cousin or something?

I saw one of those in a local FFL. It’s very, very… erm, “Tan”.

(And looks like I should have bought it - he only wanted $2200 for it then!)

yeah the Ral 8000 has been a round with the german military since WWII days if not slightly before… i kinda like it alot, compared to the lighter fde but i think my favorite is still coyote.
