Had the opportunity to shoot the 57 Rock along side the S&W 380EZ and was disappointed to discover the EZ has noticeably less recoil. After watching several videos from popular YT reviewers, I was expecting something near the .22 WMR, or even less for the 57. One very popular reviewer said there was no recoil at all. Guess you can call me gullible…
For ammo, the 57 used Fiocchi 40g Range Dynamics, the EZ, Armscor 94g, both FMJ.
Anyway, after this discovery, I’m guessing recoil on the 57 Rock is closer to a full-sized 9mm. May do another comparison with something like the CZ 75.
Hadn’t thought about that… I use both plugs and headset and didn’t notice anything louder than normal. Except the guy in the next lane testing some hot .357 hand loads.
I had each handgun loaded with three rounds on the bench, slides locked back. Shot the 57 first then quickly transitioned to the 380. Pretty sure it was felt recoil.
The EZ is just black magic. I’ve shot the 9mm version, and I think it’s fair to say it’s about the same recoil as the Rock. So it’s not a stretch for the 380 to have even less.
I can’t speak to the 380 EZ’s recoil myself because I’ve never shot it, but I will say it’s a pretty large 380 and even the beretta cheetah doesn’t have much recoil at all in 380.
That being said, I’ve owned and shot several 22 magnum handguns and I would say that the recoil impulse on my PMR30 was pretty much indistinguishable from the recoil on my various 5.7’s.
The only 5.7 that I feel has ridiculously low amounts of recoil is the Smith & Wesson.
When I compare the Rock to the Kel Tec PMR30, the recoil is similar. That said, the 5.7 wasn’t intended to be a competitor to the .22WMR or to the .380ACP. It was intended to replace the 9mm and is supposed to have something like 20% to 30% less recoil than the 9mm.
When I compare the Rock to any of my carry 9mm, the Rock has noticeably less recoil and somewhat less in the Duty Size 9mm’s.
Honestly, I just don’t feel a ton of recoil at all.
I only shot the 380 EZ once.
If you have a camera which can do some slow mo you might video from the side and see which one has more muzzle rise.
But if you like the recoil of the 380EZ, by all means, carry that.
That’s a great idea, saw Buffman do it recently. Unfortunately, our range has recently banned any photos and videos because safety was being compromised due to youngsters wanting to record and post “Rockstar at the Range” videos.
Yeah, the EZ is pretty much it for now. But I’ve only fired a couple hundred rounds through the 57. If I can get to the point where follow-up shots are reasonably good, I may reconsider.
It’s common in the firearm sports to see young kids that become of age and deck out their newly purchased firearms. They are usually very inexperienced and love to buy every $20 gun accessory they can find on Amazon.
The end resort is a gun with worthless mods in the hands of a poorly trained shooter. Then they love to post videos on social media thinking they are a member of Seal Team 6.
So the guys on the other side of the crowd (us here lol) like to take jabs and make comments about it.
Interesting observation about recoil this morning at the range. All of my 57 Rock shooting to this point (approx 200 rnds) had been from the Weaver stance. Today I was doing some drills that required an isosceles stance and voila! Much less felt recoil.
I haven’t done any research on this and didn’t think to try Weaver today, but am I right or did I just bulk up a bit over the weekend?
