I have a coworker that has been pestering me to buy an AK rifle. I told him I would start looking for a parts kit, receiver, and barrel to do a DIY buildup. And then I saw the US military surplus Yugo M70’s that Aim Surplus had acquired. I dig the underfolder look and even though the polymer furniture gets hot quicker than wood, I liked the all black appearance. Knowing they had been used for OPFOR training firing blanks, I took a chance and was able to snag one before they sold out. 43 minutes was all they lasted on the website.
Needed a thorough cleaning when it arrived, it was a filthy mess. I did have to buy the leaf spring that tensions the front flip up night and Apex had a surplus rifle grenade spigot for it, other than that it was complete. Anyone know where I can buy training grenades for one of these?
yeah… that looks sharp! ![]()
That is very cool. I totally dig that piece.
thats a good looking m70 stamped receiver version. I didnt knwo about the UsG having them and using them for training. too cool. I have a milled M70 from a parts kit that i had had built up for me years ago… love the m70s.
Nice score, op. The Yugos know how to build a solid AK. ![]()
yeah thats the best part about the Yugoslavs, all of their guns seem to be over engineered/ over built… even if its your run of the mill ak, or sks, (i have both from Yugoslavia,) and you can tell the metal is much thicker, the wood is thicker, its just built more robust… plus regarding the sks, it has the cooler blade bayonet instead of a spike. and the ability to launch grenades without much effort.
sweet
Took it to the range today. First couple shots I admit I flinched really bad, didn’t trust the gun.
So a couple flyers wide right. Need to move the sight over but I neglected to put the new sight tool in my range bag. No malfunctions, but it dents the brass most every time. Not planning on reloading so not a problem unless it indicates an issue I should check?
First target was holding on the X, second target I moved to a 6 o’clock hold and got a little more comfortable with it.
Trigger pin started to walk out, need to have a look at that.
No worries on the brass.
Are the hooks positioned right for the trigger springs and is the shepherds hook in right?
On the trigger pin walking, upon disassembly for cleaning, I found the wire spring that runs from the safety forward wasn’t seated in the groove of the trigger pin. Not sure if it was seated before I went to the range. Have to check that next time I take it out.
Pic in case it helps someone down the road. O-ring pick pointing to the wire spring in question.
Once they’re in you shouldn’t have another problem.
Good looking gun OP.
I picked up a box of Winchester white box 7.62x39 at Academy. It’s head stamp says it’s made by PPU in Serbia. Figured my AK would like a diet from its own country! Lol. I remembered to bring my AK sight tool this time and after a little fiddling with it, I think I’m getting it dialed in. I pulled one high (flinched) but the other four shots were acceptable I think. I saw PSA had the WWB on sale so I ordered more. The photo on PSA’s site clearly says “Made in USA” on the box so I’m curious if it’s different than what I bought at Academy when it arrives.
Trigger pin retaining spring stayed put this time so I bet it was out of the groove the first trip and I didn’t see it.
Dept of Conservation target, 1” gridlines, rear sight set to 200 meters, target stand at 25 yards to set battle zero.
