Hello all,
The lower handguard retainer / strap loop, rattles even though the lever is down. On other AK variants, this is used to hold the front of the grip. I have a free floating Soviet Arms marked SLR handguard that does not interface at all with it, so the only thing that would hold it in place is the lever. It seems the slot in the barrel is too deep and wide. Can it be shimmed or fixed in any other way?
You should be able to snug it up. May take removing the handguard and reinstalling.
Tonight, I took the gas tube and handguard off. When the pin of the lever is in the slot in the barrel, there is no point where a positive lock happens. There is a point when the lever is in its proper seated position that keeps the handguard retainer in place (with a very loose fit). I think I’ll get some feeler gauges and find the right one to be the sacrificial shim. I am open to other suggestions if anyone else has an idea.
Can you move it forward or backwards to get a better engagement?
I did try that as well. When moving it forward or back, the lever won’t seat. It seems that the slot is slightly deeper than it should be.
If you need to send it in then call CS. Have your order # ready.
Well, it’s fixed.
I have a tried and true method for fixing the rattle caused by a slot that is too deep in the barrel.
I went to the local auto-parts store and bought a feeler gauge set to use as a shim. I got lucky and the width was the same as the slot in the barrel. I looked for one that was thin with some spring in it. .035mm worked for me. I used tin snips and cut a small piece that was slightly bigger than the slot and gave it a try.
Solid lock up and no rattle!
Mission accomplished.
