Helene Memorial Broadcast

Starting tomorrow at 8:00am on WGCR 94.9 FM and 720 AM our remembrance and memorial program will be on. There will be firefighters, EMTs, law enforcement and local officials sharing their stories of rescue and response to Hurricane Helene. Also local pastors whose churches were centers for relief during and after the storm. Also folks from the area will be stopping by to share their experiences. Our church was a hub of activity for months afterwards and WGCR which fortunately had generator backup for both AM and FM was the only source of information in our part of WNC for quite a while. I was personally without power for 12 days but thankfully had water the entire event. You can find WGCR online and as WGCR.net and I believe it will be on Facebook live as well. The plan is for the names of those lost to be read by county starting around 5:00 pm. Join us if you can.

God bless you all :folded_hands:

@blueridge1

Thank you Sir, it certainly wasn’t us but GOD that brought about a lot of good through so many people willing to help others.

Amen brother :folded_hands:

I didn’t know we had members actually affected and I know this is way late but do you need anything at all? @blueridge1 you are welcome to message me.

Hardship always unites a community. You get through with the spirit of brotherhood and just roll up your sleeves and help one another. Grew up in Hurricane country Louisiana and have been dealing with them my whole life. The last one that really hit us hard Callaway, Florida on the coastline was Cat 5 Michael, took part of the roof off our house, took down every tree, and it looked like a war zone. We moved 225 miles inland (W central Georgia) after that.

I know that y’all had deadly flooding and faced it bravely and with little help, sadly. Politics don’t have no place in disaster areas. It was disgraceful and Un-American.

Y’all persevered though, and are truly made of the right stuff. My hats off to all those affected, and hope y’all finally recover. I know first hand that it takes years…

I hope everyone affected makes a full and complete recovery.

man that has been one horrible hurricane event.. i’ve been praying for those folks up in the n.carolina / georgia mountain area for a quick recovery since yall were hit. i couldnt believe the damage that had been done to Asheville NC from the photos i’d seen. I didnt know we had anyone here on the forums directly effected, and I’m sorry that i didnt know that.. I’ll add you to my prayer list as well.. thank you for sharing the photos and post.

There are I believe still three work crews working through Anchor’s relief program helping people. Every Friday the warehouse is still doing a “car line” with food primarily but also some paper goods etc, over 200 people came through the line last Friday.

We did a bunch of Helene relief also and this summer sent a group to work at the Toe River in WNC. We worked with Gabbi Tulsard’s foundation We Must Protect. Lots of work still to do.

Appreciate all your help! Sadly there are still folks in bad living conditions. Lots of black mold problems, unseen water leaks or unable to afford make repairs. Tomorrow officially marks one year since the storm but as it struck on Friday WGCR is having the broadcast today. Lots of events around the region tomorrow.

The Cajun Navy will be having an event at the Bat Cave FD tomorrow and serving a meal as well. Chimney Rock, Bat Cave , Lake Lure were all devastated, the topography has physically changed. Lots of homes and businesses lost not to mention the lives. They are rebuilding, Chimney Rock Park is back open as well as several businesses in Lake Lure.

Has the church that held Sunday morning service on the shore of Lake Lure ever resume services there? I think that area was completely wiped out.

Have not heard but since you still can’t access Lake Lure from Hwy 64 I would doubt it. Well technically it is open to local traffic only but otherwise you have to drive down to the bottom of the mountain and take Hwy 9 into Lake Lure and Chimney Rock State Park.

Forgot to mention Burnsville was where we worked.

I think you’re right from what I’m researching. Sadly I can’t remember the name of the church to look them up.

Just an addendum, on Friday September 26th same day of the week one year ago when Helene struck 280 families were served in the drive thru food distribution line. There are still volunteers here that were working the line one year ago, those people are living their faith and I appreciate their example.
