I went to the range with my son-in-law today. When we got there I realized I left my ammo at home. He said he had some I could use, but it was Lawman. I’ve shot Lawman in hand gun before and it’s pretty darn hot. So, I loaded 15 rounds in my Palmetto mag and and started shooting. On the 3rd or 4th round the trigger wouldn’t move. The bold was closed. It felt like the safety was on. I removed the mag and racked back the bolt. There was an unfired round in the chamber, which ejected upon me racking the bolt. I thought that was weird, so I put the mag back in and got off one shot before the exact same thing happened again. After trying it a few more times with the same results, I tried some CCI Bronze ammo. Same problem. I gave up and bagged it for the day because we had to be somewhere.
I’m still thinking about how it felt like the safety was on because the trigger was locked up with zero movement. I have a Timney trigger installed, which has been great for far.
BTW, I have the Maxim Defense roller delayed buffer installed.

Did you happen to dryfire it on an empty chamber, see how it feels?
Have any “dummy” ammunition/snapcaps? Or a spent case to drop in, see if it still does it? (Pointing it in a safe direction for each attempt, it goes without saying)
I’m not saying this will reveal the problem - but it will allow you to handle the firearm in a way that minimizes risk of an ND when trying to figure it out.

Go back to stock and change one thing at a time. Ar9s can be super finicky

I have tried firing it with a dummy round and on an empty chamber. It seems fine.
Is there a failsafe to prevent an out of battery discharge from happening if the round isn’t fully in the chamber?
I remember reading that some people had problems with AR 9s regarding some interaction between an aftermarket trigger and the safety. I don’t recall what that problem was. The reason I bring it up is they way the trigger felt when it wouldn’t fire. I didn’t try working the safety when I was at the range because I didn’t remember about the trigger/safety interaction problem. The trouble is I can’t remember what that issue actually was.
The first thing I want to do is try my own 9mm ammo that I know has worked well in the SBR. I’ll be out of town until Thursday, so it’ll have to wait a few days.
On the bright side, I’m heading to Columbus OH to see AC/DC in concert tomorrow night!

I see you’re a bourbon guy. Have you tried Four Roses Small Batch Select? Small Batch SELECT. Not just Small Batch. It has become my favorite.

Are you familiar with issues regarding aftermarket 9mm PCC triggers and AR 9s?
I am familiar with 4 Roses. One of the clubs I am in did a private barrel pick. Good stuff.
Yes, I have an AR9 and ARV. Your issue could be the trigger (make sure you didnt pop a primer and it lodged in the trigger area), could be the buffer, could be a lack of lube, could be ammo. That’s why I said start at factory and change one thing at a time.

I haven’t had any issues with mine except a Franklin Armory Binary Trigger I had some issues with.
Ended up taking it out for now, but it sure was fun to shoot.
After a few mags it would fail to fire, but it never locked up like yours is behaving.
The firing pin wasn’t hitting the primer hard enough with the binary trigger every 50 rounds or so.

Here’s an email I just sent to Timney to see if they can help .
"After approximately 200 rounds I’m having problems with my AR PCC trigger. Practicing for an upcoming match, I fired about 20 rounds without a hitch. When I tried to pull the trigger on the next round, the trigger shoe would not move. Not even a little. I racked the bolt, chambered a new round and fired it. The bolt cycled, picking up a new round, but again the trigger was completely frozen. I tried different ammo and magazines with the same result. I picked up the ejected rounds that did not fire and there was no sign of the firing pin hitting the primer. The PCC dry fires fine. Obviously, I couldn’t use the PCC in the match.
Here are some of the things I’ve noticed, going back to when the trigger was first installed. Maybe they with be helpful for to trouble shoot the problem.
- After initial installation I noticed the reset on the trigger wasn’t as quick or crisp as the Timney I have installed in my CZ Scorpion carbine. I contacted you guys about that, and you were kind enough not send me a couple of springs. Honestly, I didn’t have the confidence to take apart your trigger and try them. They are still in the bag.
- If I rack the bolt (empty chamber), I can fully click the safety crisply between Safe and Fire. When it’s in the safe position the trigger will not budge. When it’s in the Fire position, the hammer drops fully.
- After I’ve dropped the hammer by pulling the trigger, the safety only clicks part way into the Safe position. When it’s in that position and I pull the trigger the safety will click up the fire position. But, since the hammer is already down, it does not drop.
Any help you can give me with this will be greatly appreciated. I have another match coming up this weekend."

#3 is normal. If the hammer is not in the locked position, the safety cannot move off of fire to safe.
