@19foxtrot Kevin you are absolutely correct about CCI amd Eley .22lr ammo. They are always my go to ammo for self defense and target ammo. My CZ455, CZ457, target 10/22 all love and eat this ammo with no problems. This ammo is a little more expensive than Federal bulk 525 which is good ammo just for plinking but it isnāt near as accurate.
If you had to use a .22 for self defense, and you fired it at a bad guy, it would go āBANGā and they will $hit themselves! And either retreat or run or both! Unless theyāre on some crazy drugs!
Having said that, Iāve had the best luck with Aguila ammo in my KelTec P17, .22 both federal and CCi give me issues.
Did you read from the beginning?
Yes
I shoot 99% suppressed (both pistol and rifle), which I know isnāt your use caseābut for me, that means reliability matters more than velocity. No matter how filthy my .22s get, I can run the three in this picture without fail. (The photo was for something else, but it has all three boxes in frame.)
Nobody had mentioned them above or I wouldnāt have chimed in, but for suppressed pistols, Winchester Super Suppressed 45gr is my favorite. 40gr Norma Tac-22 and 40gr Remington Subsonic Rimfire also run super well for me. I assume their reliability when shooting suppressed, which is even dirtier than shooting 22lr normally, will translate to reliability unsuppressed.
One last note, since it ties into the earlier discussion on grain weight and lethality: Naval Special Warfare developed the AWC Amphibian, an integrally suppressed Ruger MkII used for wet work. It was specced to run subsonic 40gr hollowpoints. If that was good enough for them, itās not without meritāat least for offensive use.
can I just throw this into the discussion?

30 rds in mag and a flame thrower. Borderline excessive force ![]()
Man if you get a good Kel-tec PMR ⦠that thing was rocking. Great control also.
LOL absolutely, when I first read your post I read it as āCan I throw this at criminalā You can do that also!
Nothing wrong with repurposing a tool when you need it to work differently than it was intended.
āCar chaseā weapon - to shoot out the Robberās Tyres.
interesting, iāve never hear d of that before at all.
The American 180, was a prison corrections officer gun, per discussions with an 07 ffl I used to know. I got to run a few mag dumps out of his.
Also helped I gifted him a few boxes of 525 count winchester, when .22 ammo was not avalible.
I think whatever you wanna call it, most gentlemen and scholars would probably not hate to have one in their safe.
I think 21 Sharp itself is likely fine, at least thatās what little testing Iāve found generally shows, but Winchester hasnāt figured how to market it correctly. Itās a regulatory compliance cartridge, similar to 350 Legend and the like. No one was yearning for 350 Legend until states passed straight-wall hunting regulations, then it opened up the door. Us outside of straight wall states generally donāt care that much about it, but those cartridges serve an important purpose. If Winchester said, look, this cartridge isnāt for everyone now, but if you live in a state that bans lead ammo for hunting, including 22LR, weāre ready for you. I can get behind that and it makes clear who their main market probably is. The newer straight wall cartridges are pretty clear thatās why they exist, but not as much with 21 Sharp. Also, why would they not partner with a barrel manufacturer on Day One to make 10/22 barrels? Is any 22 rifle more common?
They wonāt work in any 22 barrel?
