Got to shoot my new Dagger C today. It shoots great and it’s accurate. However, I had consistent failure of the slide to hold open on the last shot. I was using two of the supplied Magpul magazines. Manually retracting the slide always resulted in a lock back. I’m confused as to what might be the problem. Any suggestions?
Depending on what you normally shoot, the slide release on glock-types is right where I lay my thumbs. I had a lot of this happen when I built my first P80s. I got used to it and the issue went away. I’d definitely try some factory Glock mags, too. The pmags are ok but not what I consider top of the line.
Could be ammo on the weaker side as well.
Three types used: Ranger T 147, Norma 124 fmj and Remington 115 jhp. Don’t think its ammo related.
Pmags have been reliable for me. It’s possibly grip. Most pistols for me end up with the slide release right under my thumb in a shooting grip. I always cut mine down so it’s level with where the slide rests on it. Even then, the tip of my thumb still hits it. On the Dagger, the slide release is extended back a bit, equivalent to the Glock extended ones. Just without the nub sticking out.
I haven’t had any Pmag fail to lock open until recently. The one that has, is a single one out of a batch of about 8, 5-6 year old mags with a lot of rounds through them.
Bought some new 12 rounders for a project and they work flawless too. I doubt you’d have gotten two defective ones at the same time.
Remington ammo has been notoriously underpowered for years.
I’ve shot Remington recently and it was fine for me. Only their 22’s are inconsistent for me. Somehow still cycles though, just. I’ve tried both their UMC stuff in the brown box, and the white/green boxes. All 115gr. Winchester white box was noticeably weak.
If it’s a brand new Dagger, it could be break in. But most people seem to be having malfunctions like stovepiping during that period. If you haven’t put a full box or two through it yet, I’d try that first. Or my secret method. Unload the gun and just rack the slide a lot and dry fire while watching videos or something.
I can’t run an extended slide lock/release and I also had to change my grip to avoid touching it. Try intentionally not touching the slide lock at all with one round in the mag and see if it locks back. I had the same issue but it was just my grip.
I prefer the Dagger grip to stock G19 but there is something about it that makes it really easy to ride the slide lock.
I noticed when using the magpul Pmags it has a tendency to not hold open since the mags sit just a fraction of an inch to low. Not sure of a good fix for it though, only way I solved it was by testing he theory by supporting the mag while shooting and sure enough it held on last shot.

Most of my mapguls work fine. It’s the old ones that fail to lock open for me. My G26L/ G1926 I made by cutting the grip down is weird though. My new magpul 12 rounders started failing to lock open after the first few reloads. I don’t mind really, maybe I got a bad batch, or need to modify my grip cut slightly. I even have OEM mags(with extensions) that fail to lock now, old mags, weak springs.
I just got a Dagger S, magpul mag was letting the slide go back into battery on an empty magazine, got a gen 5 glock 17 mag, it’s sitting quite a bit higher and locks the slide back.
