I got a vortex strike eagle lvpo 1-6. The glass is awesome for the price! I was looking for some tips on zeroing it in. I bore sight it at 100 yards on 6 power. However when I adjust the magnification to 1, the zero doesn’t match the 6 power. I am wondering if I am doing something wrong. I am new to LPVO and would love to hear some tips. Mahalo
Have you actually shot it? I have a Strike Eagle 1-8 and I sighted it in at 1" high at 100yrds (its on my 308). Even at 1x it’s still good to go close up.
I could be wrong but, the zero should not change any. However, if the scope is a second focal plane as opposed to a first focal plane then the ranging features will not work properly.
The round point of impact will change depending on the distance that you are shooting, i.e. if the optic is zeroed for 100yds and you are shooting 50yds, in theory, the impact will be low as the bullet is still climbing in flight. Bullets travel in an arc that has a near and far zero.
Oh I see that makes sense. When I shoot, it does end up low at 1 time magnification
I have shot it and at the 1x magnification, my shots are always lower
I like using a Red Dot/3X Magnifier for 150yds and in, zero at 50yds and figure my hold overs. For me sight acquisition is a little faster.
If it is second focal plane, you will have to zero it at the highest magnification.
This is my AR with the Bushnell LPVO (second focal plane; SFP) and PSA lower. After zeroing at the 100yds at the heights magnification, and at 50 on the lowest, I can pretty much gauge where the shots will land. SFP is something you have to really learn and take your time with.
Nice rifle! Thanks for the tips I will try and do that.
The point of impact should not move when you change magnification. If you can see the reticle move on the boresight tool when you “zoom” through the magification, the scope is faulty, doesn’t matter if it is FFP or SFP.
Its possible you are seeing the effect of parallax if you look through the scope, move your head away, adjust magnification, then look again. If your eye is not in the same spot in relationship to the scope, the reticle may look like it is in a different place. If you do not move your head when you change magnification, the reticle should be stationary.
It makes no difference what you set the magnification on to zero - the point of impact will not change regardless of magnification. Its much easier for me to zero using the higher end of magnification because the target looks bigger, of course.
SFP scope BDC, Mil dot, etc. reticles are correct at the highest magnification only - FFP reticles are correct throughout the mag. range. Has no effect on zeroing.
The easy button is: boresight your scope then zero it at 50 yards/meters using 6X. Verify point of impact does not change when you change magnification. POI will be low at close range, but it will shoot usefully flat from 40 - 250 yards/meters.
