Id say it shouldnt be a problem? If youre worried about surface rust i say pack them solid with dirt , some fine beach sand, some pea gravel and maybe some leaves? I guess? Don’t worry about rinsing it out , just shake it out the best you can and for the stubborn dirt in the mechanism. Urinate on it. Hose it off with a sprinkler or swish it in a mud puddle. She’ll be right as rain and shooting just fine
If you follow these steps
The bad thing is , you think im joking? You cannot neglect or hurt an AK by ignoring it? Ive never cleaned mine and ive probably had it about as long as youve been alive.
Even minimum care is too much.

Once I get the rust off I’m greasing it up until i figure out what im going to do with the finish. The GF3 Im probably going to rattle can it like I was thinking about doing before there was even issues. The GF5 Im probably going to send it off to get cerakoted. Either way im sure they will function fine with a bit of cleaning and oiling.
Buddy used wd40 specialist penetrant and #4 steel wool I believe on his dads old m1 carbine and an old rusty shotgun. They were pretty bad. Let it soak for a day. Gently rub that rust away without taking off finish. Takes time and patience. Dont force it. Id have to double check what # steel wool he used
Tell your grandkids it’s a Nicaraguan conflict bring-back.

That sure is a lot of rust. Cosmoline may be a good alternative for you if you need to store things there - even if it’s a pain to clean up. I’d probably pay someone to clean that rust since I dont have much experience.
Edit: It’s amazing the the nitrided barrel suffered too! Although I don’t use Frog Lube as much as I used to, I’ll continue using it on exterior parts.
Cleaned them up a bit today. Still needs a bit more, but ran oit of time at the moment. Pics below.
