Hi all! My AK47 is in the mail (hopefully will be here this week?) Since I’m a first time AK owner, does anyone have any advice for care and maintenance (or advice in general)? I’ve been watching rob ski and I have learned a lot. I’m just curious if this cool community has anything to add
It’s an AK. You can bury it in the backyard for 3 months, pull it out, and it’ll still run.

Congratulations
Now I’ll let some others on here offer you some real advice.
The 104 is fun! Which one did you get? Everything you have learned about cleaning, forget it
It’s the GF3. Gotta respect the classics
Nice, I want that underfolder and that spiker coming soon
Rob Ski is the YODA of AK.
That said……just have fun, mod it the way that will make it uniquely yours.
And care for it……the way YOU want. Don’t neglect it on someone else’s advice……your the one who lives with this AK. The more you use it….&…abuse it…the more you will be confident using it without pampering it. It’s not going to completely fail because it’s dirty……it’s going to begin giving you subtle signs…….when you notice….it’s time to lube, clean or both.
Personally I clean mine after each use……it’s just the way I learned…not that the AK needs it.
Welcome to the Forum….take pictures of your AK, post the pics here in the forum (AK picture thread) and share your mods and adventures with everyone here. If we can’t be out shooting……we sure like reading and writing about it.
I don’t have an AK but would recommend tools and replacement parts that may be needed down the road (not that AKs ever break
). Congratulations!
you’ll need a front sight tool

If shooting corrosive ammo, flush with warm water after you’re done shooting for the day then clean/oil as needed.
If shooting non-corrosive ammo, clean it if you have the time. If you’re short on time, it won’t hurt it if it’s not cleaned after every range outing.
I ran all of mine yesterday. First shoot just to turn money into noise in ages. Echoing what others are saying, if you use corrosive ammo, flush gas tube and barrel with warm water and allow it to dry. AKs are designed to have some very loose tolerances, so they are very forgiving on being dirty. I deep clean annually at minimum just because I enjoy undressing them and putting them back together, but if it’s a particularly high volume range day, they get a wipe down for appearance’s sake.
Rob of AKOU is a fantastic resource, but he’s still just one man. Keep your bullsh-…um, shill filter turned up to 11, wear your tall rubber boots, and wade into the cesspool that is the internet and poke around for the hidden gems that exist in the resource.
My only advice is to not try to be “old school” or hardcore and even think of using an AK cleaning rod or kit. Use modern tools to clean it so that you don’t tear up the bore and crown of your barrel.
Also - if using corrosive ammo, clean it 2x the same week. Why change it and let corrosion ruin your investment.
Have fun!
