Ruger 308 scout rifle MSRP 1300 or Ruger 308 compact MSRP 500

I was contimplating purchasing the Ruger Scout Rifle since the inspiration behind its development was famous. But after researching all the talking points, even those who participated in its development, and even those who owned serveral, it tuns out that its not much different than the standard 308 compact. In fact most don’t even use or equip the Scout as intended, placing high power variable optics right over the action instead of low powered optics over the barrel. Anyway for me the research took all the enthusiasm out of my interests. Turns out you actually get a much lighter and cost effective rifle turning a Ruger 308 compact into a “Scout Rifle”, at least IMO. Please tell me if Im wrong.

Unfortunately your resarch is correct.

I still ave a desire for a Styer Scout, just lack the $1,600. Would not mind finding a serviceable one on the used market.

The Ruger compact may move into that unfilled nitch for my shopping lists.

I almost pushed the button on the Ruger 308 compact on sale for $479, especially being so impressed with my Ruger 243 compact with its pillar bedded poly stock, even though I did have to trim out some of the stock along the barrel intended for free floating with my dremmel tool. Worked great and shoots sub moa. However I don’t need another 308, so mabe my new scout rifle will be my 243 compact, cutting the barrel down to 16" from 18" droping the weight undr 6Lbs, and mounting extending the current factory mounted picatinny forward for that low powered pistol optic. All intended for stealth scouting without giving away your position just like in like the WW2 scouts in Australia who strictly used their rifles to survive, gathering intel for the alliance, but not engaging. A neat concept rifle IMO. CORRECTION, Australian special forces behind enemy lines gathering intel on their Japanese occupiers did also engage the enemy covertly causing huge damage and sinking many ships in harbor. Their contribution a top secret and unsung until recently.

Happy Holidays sir.
I hope all is well with you and yours.

I’m thinking about buying a .308 rifle.
Did you ever get a Styer or Ruger?

This all kicks back to finding a lightweight bolt gun in .308 and yhis video sparking my interest in a handy field rifle. The video has gen 1 Ruger American in 6.5 grendel.

The two rifels below both run the AI-style (Accuracy International - style) or AICS pattern magazines.

With this iron sight picattinny rail

Though looking at some 16" vs 20" balistics data I’m more inclined toward this 20" version.
